View Full Version : Belt slipping off when given a bit

I noticed that lately when i give the barge a bit of stick as it changes upto 2nd or 3rd gear i get this squealing and the belt almost comes off... It only moves over between two or three grooves but im worried that one day when i give it a bit it may come off completly. I recently changed the top idle & tensioner pulley's and the belt, Due to another problem so i dont think it could be that. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. After shift kitting my transmisssion it has become a lot worse. I read in another thread that the pulleys have to be alligned which can apparently be done by your local Holden apprentice
I think Ill see if my mechanic can allign them and change the belts while he is in there.

Well its seems to me that once you have lifted the line pressure (transmission) either at the forcemotor(shift kitting) or electrically (edit) the connection between the drive train and engine is more constant, so when the revs drop during gear changes the more constant connection between the transmission and engine, pulls the engine revs down quicker than it would if reved before the upgrade, so the pullies are being forced to slow quicker than they normally would hence belt slip
BUT HEY GUYS I STAND TO BE CORRECTED Tonner

so all manuals would do it?

yeh they would if you could find a way to rip shift in a matter of milliseconds but normally disengaging the clutch even for a split second would avoid the slip ,unless ya belt and pullies are greasy or rooted

Align your pulleys :)

Alignment of the Power Steering pulley is the main cause of this problem. Well documented in loads of other posts in the tech section. Hint .. "search is your friend" ;)

YEP no doubt, Im just trying to explain my theroy as to why slip happens after these upgrades when it probably didnt happen the day before.

the fix for vibrating belt off idle is the tensioner?
mines getting worse, has a new belt and was aligned years ago. just fitted a new belt but still vibrating. once aligned should stay aligned unless removed eh...

took the car into holden today and they seem to think that its the tensioner itself.. they are saying that its not applying enough pressure to the belt hence the slipping off when under pressure. Have to be ordered in and are saying about $88 put has to come from sydney so a few days ill just have to take it easy for a week or so
hope they are right this time round
thanks for the advice guys
Anthony.

I have had the same problem when over revving on a downshift..
Seems that between the time some load is taken off the idler pulley then big load comes back on suddenly the belt can slip sideways a little bit. Do this a few times and off she comes.
Try installing the pulley off a supercharged V6..It has a higher side lip and I think the idea is to install it back to front ie Lip to the front of the car.

has anyone else done this and or know if it will fit

First get pulleys aligned
Second if the car has a few kms on it the tensioner will also need replacing, the hot-cold cycling in the engine bay causes the spring in the tensioner to lose some of its "springiness" :)

your guess is as good as mine moto, i thought it was to.

just put a new tensioner on reduced the vibration but didn't remove it.
probably took your last tensioner.
will look at the alignment now, also had another thought will try reversing the new belt around, perhaps harmonics maybe different the other way. no not inside out.

How much did it cost you and how easy was it to put on?

$80-90, bought it while getting other stuff.
easy to put on.. push it all the way to passenger side with spanner on the bolt, take the belt off the water pump, release tensioner, take belt off tensioner, undo two bolts 13mm, remove and replace, put belt onto tensioner, again use spanner to push tensioner, put belt back onto water pump and insure its on all other sections and release done.
well apart from removing the raditor cover and tb pipe so not in the way...

summary on mine new belt vibration didn't go away, new tensioner reduced it.
when i had the motor apart put the belt back on the other way, vibration is gone for 2 weeks now :) may have been somthing else i did but basically took everything off and put it back on the same, remebered to reverse the belt.
something to try anyway for belt vibration
