View Full Version : Massive improvement after getting the GTS tuned with Dick Today

Just got home after spending the day with Dick tuning the GTS. Wow what a difference it makes. Sooo much more power, everywhere in the rev range.

Firstly we started with just correcting the A/F ratios which were pretty out of wack and lean since fitting the extractors. Once we fixed this we moved the redline cut out from 5500 to 6000 and put more timing in the top end to make it rev to 6000 happily. (Peak power is prob about 4500rpm, but that can be changed if i get a better manifold!).

Dick also experimented around with a setting that was limiting torque (like an abuse mode if you like) and as soon as we zero'd it out, the torque came back in tyre smoking amounts :burnout: :D

Off to WSID this wednesday me thinks, see if i can get a low 14!!!!

Thanks Dick, was money well spent, no regrets!!!!

Totally mate, drives like a weapon, and i love it. Only problem is i can feel the wallet getting dryer as i search for more power

Some saving to do as the next thing i would do would probably be a new manifold and dual throttle bodies!!

You will need a cam and some compression with that, $$$ :D

Great to hear you've finally got all your problems sorted Ryzz. It doesn't surprise me that Dick was the man to sort them out either. :D

Hope to see you at WSID on Wed mate.

Is there a cure???

Sounds great mate :headbang: I've always wondered if you could do something about the torque limiters, tyre frying sounds like fun! Any decent tuner should be able to sort out things like that right? Is yours a manual or auto? Is it possible to get a 'hard' tune for the power mode and a sedate one for normal?

Cheers

I dont think you will get the same results on the torque limiter as the VT limiter is seriously scaled down compared to the VR/VS. As for the Power/Econ modes, i THINK you can, however im not a tuner so im not to sure.

Best bet is to give Dick a ring and he will set you on the right track. Worth the phone call if only to satisfy your curiousty

Do you have any before and after dyno charts showing power & torque. That would be great to see. I am always curious how much of a change you need to feel it and where in the rev range does it feel the most improvement. I am always chasing more low down torque than upper power.

I'll buzz you around thursday to discuss a meet time.

Gday Ryzz

The tuning that Dick done to your car, did he use the new real time tuning he has been developing or the usual ls1edit way most guys get.....and if so do you think it made any difference to the way the car was tuned, $$ and/or wear and tear on the engine?

No dyno charts yet Brad, it was all done on the road, no dyno time was used for the tuning.

BossV8, my car is not a LS1, as perviously stated, i found something better than a LS1, its called a 353 Stroker :D

That being the case, the Realtime software dick uses only works on the LS1's. Instead we used an older software package that was used as a datalogger, then we went back to his workshop, played with the tune in his editing software, flashed it and tried again, and so forth. Took about 8 attemps to get it all sorted to where i am now.

All logging was done on the road with me driving and dick in the passanger seat. No dyno time was used, and i personally believe that its better this way. Its tuned for the way i drive it on the road, in the conditions of the road!!!

Couldn't agree more.
Tune on a dyno if you plan on driving on a dyno.
Tune on the road if that's where you do your driving.

That's how I see it anyway, and as my previous thread showed...it seems to work! :D

:bash: I Should've seen the ride on the user descript!! (i'll use the too pissed after xmas excuse)

Looks like you got what you were after anyhow, a good improvement makes the car so much better to drive, and a good tune makes it ideal throughout the entire rev range

I almost agree. But I think dilligance would have you do the initial power runs on the dyno to check that everything is ok, get those air fuel ratios too lean and your never going to catch it on the road. Having said that, final tune on the road is a must.

Like most of the posters who told you that you would need a re-tune when you change something major like fitting extractors, after all the shyt-bagging you gave Pacemaker and Sureflo, I'm surprised that you haven't been man enough to at least offer some sort of retraction or apology to them... At least it is now going well and you are happy...

The only thing I've seen that's better than an LS1 is an LS2 :p
It's good news mate, you should be able to beat a stock LS1 now :booty:
C'mon lets see you get out there and into the 13s for the 1/4.
Well done to you and Dick.

My Automatic 215i Senator is 100% bog stock standard, even still has the original Bridgestone Expedia SO-1's. My best a WSID was a 14.796 and that was at 30 degrees with low humidity. Low 14's should be a piece of cake with mods and expert tuning. The Australian Muscle Car Club of NSW had a drag day at WSID a few weeks back. Mark Oastler and the Australian Muscle Car Magazine crew attended and are featuring the day in the March issue. 35 cars all up, sensational day, should be a fantastic read.

Here is a sneak preview.....

A dyno run would not pick up all the lean stops as a dyno is typicall done at WOT. A lot of the lean spots were on part throttle.

can do part throttle on dyno, you just don't get the same airflow conditions, fan is one speed.

agreed, he is a little deluded on the ls1

i think he has been stroking a few more things then his car

his 353 stroker maybe how many times he does it a day and not cubic capacity

I agree with all comments on the limitations of dyno tuning, BUT I still think its the first port of call before getting serious on the street for tuning.

And a BIG YES to horse power being an addiction. Last dyno run saw 375hp@wheels and I already have a box of parts to go on. Aiming for 430 to 450 at the wheels early in the new year.

Its hard around hear coz so many people are doing sub 13's!

Crap times because i couldnt even do my PB of 14.512. But as i said that is because of the Diff.

How easy do you think high 13's would be if i go 3.9's?

CarlFST60L
30-12-2004, 08:41 AM
3.9 is usually good for upto/around 2 tenths... OTRCAI or similar ram air intake upto 3 tenths (on the LS1 as the throttle body position is perfect for that setup, not sure about the strocker)...

If your getting you diff fixed may as well put 3.9's in it, maybe even 4.11's unless your a frequent high way driver....

I just drove down the coast for 6 hours each way, i have the 3.9's, it sits on 2100rpm at aroudn 140km/h, drop it back to fourth match the revs to around 3200rpm, and off ya go, left a STi wondering what the hell just happened
