Here in Nth Queensland just north of townsville
They set up photo money boxes in the tricky places
Theres even a web site showing other cleverly concealed cameras..

They hide the car under the bridge totally unseen and place the money box
inline with the pilone at the northern side so you don't pick it up till its to late.

I wasn't nailed but I'm sure many where.

Your able to fight that if it happens like that arnt you ? becuase the camera should be in complete view and they have to have those signs up to 20m from the patrol car.......they are bastards if it wasnt obvious enough they are raising revenue.....hiding just goes to prove it further

Here in Canberra our cops (Aust Federal Police) don't setup speed cameras, it's done by the local ACT Government.

They can only place their speed camera vans in the open, and only on certain roads. They make this quite clear, and even have a website showing a map of the roads. The vans are white Mercedes Benz Vito's. They even stick a hige sign on the roof saying 'Your speed has been checked'.

If you are coming here for the Summernats, you can find this info and map here : http://www.canberraconnect.act.gov.au/speedcameras/speedcameralocations.html

Be aware though, the AFP do setup up radar traps anywhere though, so don't think you'll get off scott free!

i was taking a trip from brissy to ballina and half way there in the middle of the bush a speed camera was hidden, it was so far back that you wouldn't have seen it until you had past it by a few meters, it was just lucky i was on the other side of the road and seen it coming.

And how many people still get done??????

pfft... down here in Vic we dont even get any warning signs at all. they now even have these new cameras that sit inside the car on the pasenger side, and you dont even know you get done till a couple weeks later you get a fine in the mail. These new cameras dont even need a flash to go off! I remember when i went to Albury, there was a parked car on the side of the road with a sign behind it, 'Speed camera in area' (or something like that). I wish they had those things here too.. but down here it is all money raising revenue!!! Priks.. I got done by them so many times in the past, spent well over a grand (if not two) in fines, but now when ever I see a parked car on the side of the road, no matter what make or model, or YEAR, I always slow donw. Just cant trust the F$#%s.

flash for cash  in qld were lucky, being from vic some years ago .unmarked speed cameras have been around for12-15 years..up here they put a sign up and use a marked car.you usually get flashed for 20 ks prior ..and we still have a leanient limit in vic it is 3k over....what we need is decent roads and speed limit to suit..

The way speed cameras are used here in the NT is very reasonable, especially when compared to some of the tactics used down south. "Piggy banks", as they are known up here, are big white checkered vans that are usually parked in the same places and, on top of that, these locations are listed in the NT News every day. They are generally fairly easy to spot.

We still have unmarked cars ect as well, but I don't think these are used by the same methods as in other states. And they are mostly late model Commodores....

Oh, and last year we had the lowest road toll ever recorded since records have been kept (33 I think) - I think this result speaks volumes for using reasonable tactics, and a commonsense approach to law enforcement on the road.

Very well said chook. This might go off topic a bit, but of course we dont speed in the built up areas, ie around schools, etc etc. we do have brains and respect for other people, but it is the open roads that i'm talking about, where the chances for an accident are very minimal. :D

I think anyone who's driven a car with a bit of power has been guilty of it. We're all here because we love these cars both stock and modified. What would be the point of owning a performance car if you never put the foot down once in a while? Anyway, each to his own.

I'm not advicating We all should speed ,no ones that stupid.
Some brain dead oxygen thief was caught doing 212 kms and an interstate
traveller was flashed doing 168KMS in a 70 zone in town !

Yes the cars are marked in Queensland but they are usually hidden and the
warning signs are turned sideways so only the cows can read them.
They use dualcab tojoes, cruisers, wagons you name it
and most of the time there camaflarged

Mostly its law abiding mums and dads get nailed for a few Kms over.

I'm nearly 47 and owned XW GT,XU 1, and a 924 turbo and 900SS duke and I still have all points But hiding in the bush seems more like filling the piggy bank to me

The main problem with speed cameras is that they are passive devices. You pass a cop doing 120 in a 60 zone, you hear about it within seconds :bash:. You do that past a camera, weeks later.
In the UK they have fixed cameras on black spots (well... most of the time). Everyone knows where they are, no one speeds under it's baleful eye. Job done. Here you never know, and, as we are inherent risk takers, we get pinged at random. That, coupled with unrealistic speed limits, means the cash just keeps rolling in.

Over Christmas here (in WA) I only saw cameras on double lane divided freeways, never on the back streets. Wish we had a decent minister for police  .

Its common sense to not have fixed ones and mobile ones. People are then just slowing down because they know its there, not because its a black spot, defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

The road toll is going down every year despite more and more people on the roads...its more due to safer cars imo.

I thought the road toll had actually plateued (spelling) out or had risen again - it's just the politicians twisting the figures to suit their own agendas?

Safer cars would be a factor for sure but I do question some of the law enforcement methods currently in use in the southern states, and the impact these have on road toll figures.

I don't know the very latest figures but when reading a motor magazine article about a year ago they had the road toll figures from about 1980 and they were decreasing every year right up through to the last year listed (which would be 3 years ago at most)
