View Full Version : LS2 SS & SV8 - WHEN?
Hi all,
What's the latest on the release of the LS2 in the SS & SV8?
Previous info suggested early 2006 as the release date for the VE. Do we know for sure that the LS2 will trickle down to SS & SV8 models in the VE?
Does anybody have any hot gossip to update this topic?

everything at this stage is just speculation, holden won't release any info on future product.
there was another thread about this not long ago and the general feeling is that it would be a while before the LS2 went into a holden badged car.

Ive heard from what i think is a fairly reliable source that HSV still want a few more years for the engine to be exclusive to them. Either way, theres still the current Monaro (260kw), Coupe4 (270kw) and VY2 HSV (285kw) spec engines Holden can use

i have heard at the end of this year we will see the ls2 in a holden just before the ve comes out because the ls1 doesnt pass some new laws
Im also told this is a 100% by someone very high up at holden

without turning this into a Holden vs Ford thing, if it is emissions, does that mean that the Ford V8 does currently (or will meet) the new emissions regs?
hmmm....a SS with 270kW sounds nice... :)

i think the current ford v8 is fine i might be wrong
I have only heard that the ls1 doesnt pass which is why the ls2 will be in the commodore sometime near the end of this year

I was doing a bit of a search about the New Vehicle emission laws and came across this bit on the NSW RTA Gov. site, not so much emission but the bit about Signature noise levels and modified exhausts looks interesting....
Reducing vehicle noise
Noise Emission Standards
The RTA strongly advocates tighter vehicle noise standards. In 2002-03 new noise standards for light and heavy vehicles were introduced. These standards had not been updated for more than 15 years. A new Australian Design Rule, ADR 83/00, was gazetted in March 2003, which introduces more stringent noise limits for new vehicles sold in Australia. The new noise standards will take effect from 2005 and will mean new cars are 3dB quieter, while new trucks and buses will be between 4-7dB quieter than current standards. The new standards include a ‘signature’ noise level that is recorded and unique for each vehicle model. These model specific standards will form the basis for enforcement of noise standards in the future. The signature approach is designed to minimise excessive noise caused by poorly maintained or modified exhausts.

well you could say that the changes to the SV8 and SS coming in Feb are a Series 2 without being badged as such

I don't want to hijack the thread but what new changes coming in Feb? Read about the SV8 getting SV6 outfit but what is happening to the SS? What else is the SV8 getting?

The end of this year sounds about right for LS2. re . the Euro 3 emissions are to be phased in by 2006 in Oz(and even tougher Euro 4 sometime after 2008 when we will then be in line with EU standards),LS2 already conforms with euro3 -very impressive for a 6 litre V8 . LS1 does not ,so there is our answer. AFAIK the BA 6 and 8 and the new alloytec are all currently only euro 2 standard. The BA six & alloytec were probably designed with emission upgrades in mind(i know the alloytec definately), I'm not too sure about the boss engines though,as they are a bitsa/parts bin engine put together from an existing range.hmm.

Hasn't there been talk that the VE will appear in the first half of 2006 rather than the usual September or so release?
It would be pretty odd to put the LS2 in the VZ for six months or so, if that was the case.

How dificult would it be to make the LS1 comply though, it might be just a matter of altering software and cats/exhausts etc. and maybe adding a few other bits in the way of tack on emission controls. Just a thought. They made the 308/304 go through various standards over the years. Or is this a real major jump? If the Ford motors don't comply I would imagine they would do what ever was needed to bring them up to date, can't see them dumping what they have just yet. So maybe the LS1 might live on for a while.

It has been stated late last year, on several American GM related webb sites,
that the factory that maufactures the LS1 and LS2 motors in Canada, will cease production of the LS1 motor, in mid 2005.
As to how long before we see the LS1 in Holden vehicles, will depend on how many LS1 motors Holden have in stock at the time the LS1 goes out of production.
I have been told from a very reliable source that the HSV LS2 will produce in the vicinity of 325KW by fitting a new exhaust system and a retune. This will happen with the Z Series 2.
The same reliable source also told me to expect the LS2 in Holdens, sooner than everyone is speculating. He would not tell me exactly when. He said to expect around 285 to 290 KW.
Holden are not going to come out and say we are switching to the LS2 in August 2005. If they did, how many V8's do you think they would sell between now and August?

Would not be worth doing it all for a six month run of LS1's though. Being cleaner sheet designs the Holden & Ford sixes would have had the proposed emission standards already "built in" for an easy upgrade,so no worries there.Given the emission parameters my guess is LS2 late this year (or as some have said the VE will lob very early 06 which i doubt). Because the LS2 already has it's euro3 certification i reckon LS2 in Holdens in or around that time would be the obvious solution .
If i remember correctly any new *models* must be euro3 this year (2005)& *all* new vehicles must be euro3 compliant 1 Jan 2006 .
It's all food for thought.

FYI
AUGUST
The last change to the current VT-based
Commodore before the all-new VE arrives in
the first half of 2006, the VZ Series II update is
expected to bring minor cosmetic changes, more
equipment and the debut of Chev’s Gen IV V8.

Well according to this http://media.gm.com/division/2005_prodinfo/powertrain/engines/05_car_engine_specs.html the LS1 will still be with us in VE. I'm tipping we will only see LS2 in HSV cars. Maybe after VE we get LS2 as standard.
