But willing to buy a good after market filter to fit.

Any one done a dyno on the different brands or got a favorite ?

I have got a K&N and it seems to do the job. Standard induction system as yourself. I gave it its first clean a few months back and that is a great feature. All the grime came straight out using the cleaning kit.

Autobarn have them on special at the moment for around $95 I think. They were in the last brochure a couple of days ago.
Check out here (http://www.chipmaster.com.au/Project%20Monaro2.htm)
Daniel from chipmaster dynoed a k&n, stock paper filter and no filter at all on his monaro and the differences were marginal. A k&n or similiar is handy because it can be reused, like Clint said autobarn are selling them for under $100 which is a good price, some places sell for as high as $160. I bought mine in the states new for $54 so about time the prices are coming down!
Also as said above the second hole mod if well worth the $5 and an hour of your time. There is a 'how to' link somewhere here if you do a search.

i know where to be looking if it ever needs replacing. speaking of which, has anyone ever had to replace their's for any reason? i've "re-charged" mine twice since i got it.

Just a quick note:
One of the sponsors on here did back to back dyno runs with; a new stock air cleaner, a new K&N type and then no cleaner at all (with a MCAI).
The results?
Same power all runs.
The conclusion?
NO power gains with a K&N type filter, BUT just clean and re-oil it and you'll never need to buy another filter. :)
So kiddies, don't buy one to gain 500rwkw, but to save money in the long run.

Yep did the same test on my car with a BMC, KN, paper and no filter...
Same result

It maybe one of those mods that has no benifit at the near standard power level, but when you crank up the power and need that extra flow the K&N will keep breathing.

Same result You will probably find that the power improvements are marginal if at all, but you will find that there is better throttle response and better fuel economy with the K&N (or equivalent) than with the std one, and to run none is   :bash:

Thanks for the feed back I was about to invest in one but I think I will hold off until I do the whole CAL system.
Amazing what you can find out if you just ask

If they all flow the same, (and the dyno figures point to that) then everything else will be the same.
I'll say it again:
The only "improvement" with a K&N style filter is that you can reuse it.
I'll stick to that until PROVED wrong. :booty:
