Excuse the question but if you don't ask you'll never know, right?
What is flat changing and how do you do it. Does it screw your gearbox in anyway?
Cheers

Flat shifting/changing is not backing off the accelerator when changing gears. Depending on how good you are at doing it, it doesn't do alot of damage, but if you don't do it right, then say good bye to your clutch. :)

Hmm, would some fancy Fly-By-Wire programming allow for 'safer' Flat Changing?
Cheers,

APS used to have a rev limiter hooked up to the clutch where if you put your foot on it , it would rev limit the car to 4500. They had it in on of their REX kits to help keep the boost up

Its done on bikes all the time where the revs are high. You need to change very quickly and before the rev limiter.
With practice it will become second nature .....but not on the street

Manuals with paddle shifters like the Ferraris have software which does all that. You hold the throttle flat, it disengages the clutch, backs the timing and injection and releases the clutch and brings back the spark and fuel. Same effect, doesn't destroy the driveline.
Experienced drivers still say they prefer a stick and clutch pedal.

I thought flat changing was when you changed your flat tyre for your spare tyre... :p

It fux gearboxes - the synchros don't like it. Not nice on the rest of the driveline, either...

And all the so called experts on "flat-changing" have gained their experiences on every other person's cars but never their own!!!!!

Yes but bikes have sequential gearboxes - as do V8 Supercars where flat changing is also standard practise - but Holden/HSV LS1s have regular gearboxes...... and they are quite expensive....... your choice if you do it or not!! :D

V8 Supercars have H pattern not sequential gearboxes
They have dog engagement gearsets rather than synchro cones

Been there done that on a stock pcm

Fair enough - I knew they had something which meant flat changing is easier/not so much of a problem. Didn't they run sequential boxes at some point in the past or am I thinking of some of the cars from the Group A days?
Anyway I still don't and won't flat change my M6!

I think the European Touring cars use a sequential box. The World Rally Cars definantly do.

V8 Supercars is basically the only major motorsport that doesnt. All so that performance better reflects driver ability
