Recently a car come out at me without looking and I put on the anchors and avoided a mishap.
The thing was that the other driver had a dog in the car and I noticed it lurched to the front windscreen but didn't seem hurt.
I don't know if it was in the back but it got me thinking why doesn't the law make you get a seat belt for an animal.
I saw something a while back where you can hook something up to a baby seat point.
I feel sorry for the animals in the car but I also think a big dog could give you some decent injuries flying from the back seat only to hit you in the head.
What are your thoughts.

My mother and sister both have a pair of Ridgebacks that happily sit in the back seat with their seatbelts on...

Actually not the normal seat belt, but its a shoulder harness that clips onto the seatbelts.. works well - stops them roaming about and does restrain them in sudden braking.

Your right - probably should be the law considering a dog to the back of the head would do considerable damage in a crash.. especially one of the little dogs that inhabit the parcel shelves of some cars :D

I thought it WAS the law?

Even worse than a little dog on a parcel shelf, one day when travelling south on the Bruce Highway I came up behind a car that had a CHILD laying up on the rear parcel shelf  while the car was doing 110km/h - and as anyone who travels this highway knows, many times the traffic will just suddenly slow right up for no reason requiring hard braking.
I expressed my horror out my window as I drove past :cussing: and the kid was yanked down by a back seat passenger. Farken idiots some people.

Having dogs/items laid out on the parcel shelf is an offence, having a kid laid out on the parcel shelf should be gaol, do not collect $200!
It boils my blood  when you see parents with kid's freely moving about the cabin with no belt on, or worse still I saw a family in the Volvo wagon, windows up tight, 2 kid's in the back seat, mum in the front sucking on a cancer stick, Dad pulling on a f@Ck*n cigar! What hope has a child got if the parent's don't even care about your welbeing?
Get this, there is a family living in the block of villa's I live in, when they pull up at the front to get the mail, and every so often the kid's get out (4 & 6 y.o) and sit on the bonnet and the father drives all the way in to the back of the complex. What would happen if the the kid's were to fall off and hurt themselves, or worse killed, the strata would end up being sued for his negligence because there are no signs in the complex saying do not drive with person's on front of vehicle, in other words me the owner!
Just to paint an even more colourful picture of the family, I saw the 6y.o the other day with a cast on his arm, asked what happen to your arm, he replied "Mummy was playing with me and dropped me."
YEAH RIGHT!

Did you know in NSW, it is a a driving offence for having a child under 12 sitting in the front seat of a vehicle if the back seat is free, where applicable.

The whole reason I bought an SS Wagon. I've got a Ridgeback and a Viszla, they get in the back behind the cargo barrier nice little mat to lie on. Last thing you want in a car accident is to survive the initial impact only to wear 38Kgs (in the ridgebacks case) of dog in the back of the scone.

I thought it WAS the law?

Was my impression as well, I used to use the same type of restraint when I had an XR8, worked well

there is a car harness for dogs made by a company called Beau Pets, you should be able to get them from vets or some pet shops. a google search finds this: http://www.beaupets.com.au/ and this: http://www.petalia.com.au/templates/prodsublist.cfm?group_no=6048

according to the Holidaying with Dogs booklet, 2500 dogs are involved in car accidents in australia every year. that's dogs in cars, not hit by them.

I'll have to look at these restraints at this place Skully mentions.I have 2 newfoundlands @ 68kg per dog. They won't be flying into the front, but I don't want them smacking the back of my seat in a sudden stop.

Old thread I know but shows that I did use the search function...

I read in the owners manual of my Adventra that there is a Pet Barrier available.
Its apparently a soft Cargo barrier that can be folded down and put in the compartments on the back of the wagon when not needed. It apparently acts like a net stopping the dogs from coming over the back seat while still absorbing some of the impact.

I have tried a number of times now to locate one of these so we can take our two Siberian Huskies with us again on family outing etc.

If anybody can help with this it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe somebody has one tucked away at home that they don't use??

I remember seeing a thread here somewhere about part numbers and the like, I might try posting there as well as it is a genuine Holden part.
