I'm looking at changing the gear knob on my gen 3, 6 speed from crapy to something else. But what knobs can fit the weird shape stick?

The Series I Monaro gearknob is identical to the VX SS one only it is leather..costs a bit more though but fits exactly. The VY onwards gearknobs do fit sort of! The gear lever on the VY is angled about 30 degrees so the gearknob doesn't sit straight. The locating tab in the top of the gearknob has to be removed but then it has to be glued to the shaft with stronger than normal stuff! eg araldite!

With the use of a plastic sleeve on the shaft
I successfully fitted a leather Momo gearshift knob
to replace the horrid Holden one
and
also, it was cheaper than the leather Monaro one
(which imo is not much better than the standard one)
cheers

I did the same to the clubby. Plastic sleeves of various sizes and grub screws come with the kit. I went with the Momo 'race' http://www.momo.it/momoeng/set1.html ( pictured on the shift home page )

Did have one nice knob :D
Current have the HSV one with shorter lever nice got it from a forum member at at top price :D
Monaro one would be a goos option, I remember Starr Performance selling them from $120 for the knob and boot.

Cool.. someone else with same Momo knob as mine.
One thing I sometimes wonder is if a cop, if he was trying to be nasty, would try to defect you for having a shift knob without the shift pattern on it.. I read somewhere that it's legally required.
Would have saved my clutch some pain on at least one occasion... had a guy at a suspension shop try to reverse it by straining it in 5th.

I actually have TWO...Momos for mine
the "Race" like you and the "SuperAnitomico" (in dark grey leather)
change 'em around now and again
both better than the stockie ;)

and finally
I got sick of them too...
still did not feel right in the hand when shifting :box:
so
I made my own!
its a HZ GTS gearknob
on a height adjustable shaft (about 30mm up and down)
and its angle adjustable with the use of shims
about 15° towards or away from the driver or standard (not angled)
the shaft has the standard Holden antivibration bush on it
so no rattles and
the shifter shaft has a thread at the top so it will accept any screwon knob
the shaft just bolts to the standard T56 extension
and
it works very well
in the piccies the shaft is set just about at its highest
..for the best leverage
1-2 shifts and 2-3 shifts are now easy
