I'm going to do cam/heads on my 2002 Monaro and I really want to know how they sound.

Please post any mp3's of LS1's with any cam and/or cam/head mods.

If you could also supply cam brand and list duration specs as well that would be great.

Cheers,

Chesso

while i dont have any recordings of them, i have put a few different cams in ls1's, and the results are great, the sound is terrific, crow do a couple of good ones, so choose the one to suit your applications. I also have a cv8, with wilwood big brake kit, adjustable suspension, titanium exhaust, long length headers....goes good, sounds even better

Awesome idea.
Some people like to swim in pools, others just like to suck piss and look at em... meaning... everybody doesn't want the same thing. Whilst performance is very important when you spend big bucks, it's also nice to hear what your ride should sound like with different cams etc.

I't would be great to see this thread full of Ozzy Car sounds to refer to. When I get my little 220/224 Comp in I'll put it up.

This site is also a good start. http://www.ls1sounds.com/

C'mon boys... let's hear it!

Could be a good opening for a Tuner/Sponsor. :D :D
I'm sure there's heaps of people that would like to click before opening their wallets.
How long would it take to record 10sec on idle and about 20secs on dyno... about 30secs I reckon...

You read my mind before I even saw this thread Chubba!

Yes agree totally with this statement as I am thinking of going cammed one of these days and wanna hear a few and see some results before I decide to go for an angry rocker or a wild whiner :)

no worries. I'll record one tomorrow. I'd do it right now, but its after 9, and unfortunately the beast coming to life would set off all the car alarms in a 5km radius :)

(its not that bad, but it does shake things in my unit - on the third floor  )

I will stick my head out the window in about five or so mins and listen out for it all the way over here in Melb.

From what you say, sounds like a nice cam.
What you running if you don't mind me asking?

Its a cam best suited to a manual, but I have it in an A4 as I wanted the old 5L shake and growl.

And I dont have some hair brained loud exhaust, just a redback .... its just that my garage, leading into the underground car park, acts as a horrendous echo chamber. I guess my neighbours are used to it now, but I still feel a little guilty every time I turn the key.

Cheers for the info, think that seems a popular cam size. I am thinking of getting one similar or slightly bigger for mine, not sure yet.

Yep know just what you mean about underground car parks
Cammed or not can sound louder then it really is.

Now that sounds like an awesome cam -- very old school ... I miss the way the old torana used to idle between 900-700RPM -- up and down... passengers used to get seasick at the lights ;)

G'day,
I have taken a couple of quick sound clips. I have a Comp Cams 222/224 112lsa in my Calais (4 speed Auto). As mentioned in a previous post, it also has a redback cat-back exhaust - nothing over the top.

I just used an iPaq to record the sound, so they aren't too flash ... the start up sound was recorded outside the car, the others were inside the car. The Inside2outside file involved me getting out of the car and walking around to the back. I would have ripped up the streets for you, but I was holding the iPaq and wouldnt want it to fly out the window as my arms crossed ;)

Mod edit: bleh. Either seedy is having a laugh or his site has been hacked. eitherway, not really what we want to see here.

There ya go guys ... flame me all you like :D

What player did you use to listen to the clips?

I have used it on both Windows media player 10 for Windows XP and Media player 8.5 for pocket pc. Admittedly it was my first shot at making an mp3 and it did report an error. Should i just post up the raw wav files? Can anyone else play them?

Tried Windows Media Player 10 on XP SP2, but wont work.
Also real player still wont work.
If you can yes post up the raw wav files.

Thx

Will this help? The sound seemed to carry into the pits quite well....

4 mb, need Quicktime. (http://kinkypr0n.com/gallery/albums/vids/Ben%20Burnout%201.MOV)

PS is a 230/230 cam with 2.5" twin system.

I get a lot of compliments about my exhaust note but no police attention thus far!

I'd be happy to post up an mp3 ...

This must be an FAQ, but what (cheap!) equipment do I need to record audio? The subsequent conversion to mp3 would be no problem.

Well many months after I started following this thread, i got some goodies to share.

Cammed LS1 with 3500 Hi Stall.

Sorry the device I used to record it is not the best, but still gives you an idea how the beast sounds. In real life it is awesome and rocks and grunts at the lights like no tomorrow.

Enjoy!!!

Foot sunk in a bit too hard, oops 0 to 60 quickly with a bit of :burnout:

Bit of note:

Take off from lights not too quick, but then have to boot it a little:

Bit of idle, ahh sounds heaps better in real life:

This is what creates all the greif:

Comp 228/230 112LSA, forgot what the lift was, would have to look it up.
I hope to have a proper good qual sound file this weekend so will re-post it as the ones above probably sounds a bit strange.

Anywayz in real life its far from disappointing :D

You just rekindled my desire to have a cammed 8. How has fuel consumption been since?

Wow, this thread lives, better post a cheapo recording of my ride coz I did start this thread and would've appreciated this feedback when I posted this in my pre-cam days.

http://www.haroc.1337thing.com/ls1/Chessos%20CV8/Monaro%20with%20cam.WAV

By the way, nothing against the blown brigade but is it just me or do cammed cars just sound so much sweeter.

ehhh :hide: traffic driving, hmm gone up from 18l to high 25's
If there is any justification, highway cruise is fairly much similar to as it was with stock cam.

The power and sound difference, well, I just cannot complain about it :D

I just could not go past the sound of a cammed V8. I just wanted one!

Gee, did not expect the revs  just woke the house up

Sounds sweet. Yeah, I love the sound of a supercharger loading up, but as I said above, just cannot go past the lobed cammed idle that makes a car sound tuff.
Nothing beats that in my books.

Thanks team illucid,

Only prob, it was a lot louder than I thought before fitting the cam in real life and now really bellows out the V8 note with a 3500 stally in it. I am just waiting for one of those dreaded EPA letters to arrive one day. :bash:

May have to invest in another rear resi, but still keeping the current one for now as I just love it.

 surely not that bad ;)

It does depend on setup, size cam you chose etc and how you drive it.

I know mine is not huge, but its no baby either. A friend of mine has (i think) 222/224 with 112 LSA and it goes through about 21-22l around town with moderate traffic stop and start and drives everyday. He said it was higher when he first got it due to several things. A little trimming of the AFR's etc helped a little but I wonder why he still went through more until lately :p

A good tune is everything of course and will keep usage down and provide the goods still.

I think I need to review light accelerating AFR's a tad more, but I don't think I will get it down much, unless I control the right foot.

Higher fuel comsumption at idle and stop start is one of those things with cammed cars due to the larger overlap etc, but I see past that as its awesome all round and turned it into an absolute violent beast.

If you baby it around in traffic and control the right foot somewhat, it helps save some lts. Then when you want punch and don't care about consumption for a sec or two, you got it all there.

I know it all does not sound too comforting now, but you will probably enjoy every minute of it.

What sorta cam you choosing etc?

Send a PM if you wish.

Jphdg, i wanted a cam for low-mid torque and mentioned what i was running...
VX Monaro, M6, 20 inch wheels, 3.91 gears, Port/poliseh Tb & Maf, MCAI 2 hole, full tune, HM headers, high flow cats & twin 2 1/2 pipes and stock everything else.

They recommended...Crow cam 228@0.50, 550 lift, 112LSA, flash tune, agressive ramp. Dual springs, titanium retainers, 1.7 YT rockers, 4 Inch Maf pipe, hardened pushrods, twin chain, 25% UD balancer and pulley kit and lifters + misc items. oh, and if the heads needed to come off, they'd get a port/polish and a shave etc.

After looking around, I was originall looking at 224@0.050 112 LSA. I dont think I wanted to go larger than 224 but he said the 228 will rev better. As I drive mine everyday, i think it's too large. I have put the cam on hold until I can discuss this with CROW tomorrow. I was worried about the idle quality but I was told that even with a 112 LSA, this can be "tuned" to idle smoother. I didnt however mention that fuel consumption is something I must also consider. I did want a lopey idle but a manageble one that even the wife can drive. I didnt want to butt in on this thread but I think it may help the original post.

All I need now is a  and a :diddy:

keep rokn :headbang:

Fair enough Don, yeah, performance wise with you planned mods that is going to go awesome. You will for sure need a few more  after a quick squirt when the cam is fitted. :D

If you do fit new lifters, yup, heads come off with the LS1's, so may be worth getting some work done while they are off.
I honestly don't know how heads and compression raising would impact on fuel econ as I never had it done before.

Agree... have a chat with the guys doing the cam and ask em everything you can think of regarding the issues and go from there.

All said though, I cannot deny with my experience with the cam so far, fuel econ is not going to please all.

If you do get it done, good luck with it and...of course we all want to hear it!! :p

Thx for that info jphdg, looks like a few more talks may sort out a balance of power/torque and fuel economy (21lt/100klms sounds ok to me)

I'll have to chat also about lifters etc aswell. The sooner I decide, the sooner I can post mp3 and movie aswell. Just need hazza and team illudid to validate me...hint hint :nyuk: hehe

I've listened to some on ls1sounds.com but I think we need some sounds from LS1's in Oz.

I have a website that I was going to use as a forum but I may just convert it to a site for my new toy and maybe even host some sounds/movies. At the moment I pay for the damn thing but havnt got off my ass and made use of it yet. Once I get it goin, I'll post a link for all to hear and see. I'll have a chat to my mate hosting it and see if registered users can post their own movies and mp3's. Currently I think they can only upload pics.

If you want to have a look (dont pay me out, it's tempoary) the website is currently...
http://www.ooncha.com/

There is a pics link that i was trying out but I will probably rebuild the whole site and dedicate it to cars only. And yes, that is my 3D graphic work...fyi.

Hope to have the site rebuilt within a month or so..till then :driving:
