Hi everyone,

I'm Paul, I've been browsing this site for a few weeks now as I'm trying to sell my '95 Toyota Supra and step into a '97 SS ute (or similar)

I've never owned a Commodore of any kind before, and coming from a Supra, have heard about issues with holden reliablility and quality, and a few things I've read on this site havent made me feel any better about it. the following is a quote from another thread on this site.

Basically, you could have any number of problems with your VY. Oil consumption problems, lifter noise, piston slap, gearboxes whether auto or manual have problems, suspension, power steering,AH! thats all i can think of at the moment! (But! All cars have problems.)Its a toss up on whether you buy new and run with the warranty, or buy a 2/3 year old car that should have had all its problems fixed & hopefully nothing happens! PLEASE! PLEASE! Read alll documents, if you buy a after market warranty. ( Basically they suck!)

The Supra is 10 years old, and from the day I bought it, it's been faultless, everything on that car still feels tight and fresh, gearbox, driveline, you name it, there's been no issues.

I love V8's and am wanting something the throw a motocross bike in the back of, but I'm only wanting to spend about $17k

Can I expect similar hassle free motoring from a similarly aged holden as I have with my Supra? if not, what are the common things to look out for? I get the impression Holden gearboxes are a week point?

This isnt a holden bashing post, as I said I'm hoping to buy one, so I'd appreciate any help.

Cheers,

Paul.

ps, love 'em or hate 'em, the post '93 Supras are a very strong and well built car. Hoping I wont regret selling it for something troublesome.

Well champion I have owned two 5 litre Holden V8's (one totally flogged before I got it) and neither have cost me any money. The old 5 litre V8 in the series 3 VS utes would be fine, just some Gen3 5.7's have issues.

mate i have had a couple of commodores and the only things that have needed repairs are self-inflicted things. so it is just pot luck just like bying any car.i think you'll make a good choice, goodluck anyway
