gday guys,im looking to repaint my 18" furys and im wondering what sort of paint is best to use? And also is it recommended that you undercoat the rims 1st?
Rims have no tyres on atm and there currently a shiny type of silver but i want to change to a darker sort of silver,so does anybody have any tips when painting rims?

Yes, get them done by a professional .... and if you can afford it, get them powdercoated rather than painted. The finish and durability is much better.

Powdercoated? Hmmm... not sure about that. The best finish is a gloss finish - much easier to keep clean. I painted my wheels a holden shadow-grey. Just tones down the wheels a bit.
Not sure if u can get a gloss finish on powdercoat. But if you can, go for it.

yeh not keen on powdercoating as once it gets chipped it cracks.
So which paint would be good to use.. 2Pac or acrylic? i have a good compressor and what not so im looking to do it at home but im not a Agrade painter by any means but do well with spray cans on small items, so im looking for the easiest paint to use.
MNR-0 do you have a pic of your wheel in that shadow grey?

You can indeed. Powdercoating has been done on the wheels of one member of this forum (Dane), and is also used on the OZ Racing wheels seen on the HRT427 concept - a few people on here have already purchased sets of those wheels for their LS1's. It gives a quality of finish that really can't be matched by painting.
But since MrVLT wants to do a home job  , powdercoating is out.

I painted the rims on my old SV5000 years ago, scuffed them up, put on some plastic primer and then painted it with 2 pac, came out brillant and from what I have seen the paint is still on them years later

I had my VYSS rims painted in champagne before i put them on the car, a mate thats a spray painter did it for me. Basicly the paint is run of the mill 2 pac, it was a special clear coat that's made for doing wheels that finishes it off, i can't remember the name of it but from memory PPG sells it, prior to putting it on though you need to give the rims a good sand back and clean... I've had mine on the car now for 12 months and they still look like new apart from a few gutter scuffs..

Dude, if you are painting your wheels take them to CSV. Tell Peter Grant (aka. MNR-0) sent you. I was charged $80/wheel incl. smoothing out the scuffs, repainting in 2-pac and finishing with gloss. That's great value.

shit mnr-o that is cheap.
i am in sydney and my work collegue got the original rims on his 2001 wrx painted black by a professional @$200.00 per rim and he got that price because he had to do some other wotk to his car.
$80.00 per rim is unbeleivable and I would definitely go for that.

Before I get blasted by Pete  , I should mention that I have been a long standing customer of theirs and no doubt they looked after me. BUT they will offer you the best possible price and have repainted many wheels for customers. Its usually a 2 day turn around job - although it can be done in 1 day if you are prepared to sit and wait.
I can't say they will quote you the same price, but if anything it should be WAY WAY less than $200/rim. I forgot to mention CSV was historically a panel beaters shop before turning vehicle manufacturer. As far as paint work goes, he's the best value for money around and has the full kit to boot.
Cheers and good luck!

As promised, pics of my painted wheels. I have provided a similar pic taken a year ago with the stock finish for your comparison.

This pic is a little on the dark side so don't think they are indeed brighter! Just look at the first pic to see that.
