Hey guys, a mate has a VR 165i Ute. The weird thing is it has a HSV plate in the engine bay. He told me that the guy he brought it off told him that the plate was because HSV put the manual gearbox in.

He's curious to see what it is really there for?

The plate says:

Old School HSV Logo
Very Special Cars

MODEL VR P&A
BUILD 637
PART 07509 & 1
DATE 4/8/94

Thanks guys,
Jez

He sure its not a 185i? If its a non-hsv and has a hsv build plate, its probably got the HSV Enhanced package (exhaust, chip, knock sensor, good for 180-185kw depending on model i believe)

Mate,

Sounds like a HSV Enhanced Ute. Basically it comes off the holden production line, goes to HSV, they wave there magic wand over it and the power goes up to 185kw. It gets the HSV CAI Flute (Sits over the radiator), Knock sensor & HSV exchast (Twin system through single cat).

Have a look under the car and see if the mufflers have HSV written on them. Also ring HSV and give them the VIN Number, possibly engine number (dont think so though) and HSV Build number and they will be able to tell you if its truly is a HSV Enhanced package.

Also look on the rocker covers, it should have "185i" on each rocker cover.

If you want more info just PM me, i used to have a HSV Enhanced SS.

Hope this helps

Ryan

The only problem with VR/VS Enhanced is that a dealer could order a calais instrument cluster with the car a it would get a HSV ID plate and be called an enhanced. The best thing to do is call HSV with your build and tag numbers and ask what was done.

Really, wow i never knew that, thanks Dickie, thats interesting to know!

JezzaB, as i mentioned, call HSV, i think Renata is the person you need to speak to, but just ask the reception who you speak to for vechicle checks. Give them the info and they will tell you on the spot whats been done.

Hope this helps!

hmmm
very interesting
the missus is driving my ol' 185i VR Berlina (series1)
which came to me with....
185i sticker on fuel railcovers (not rocker cover)
CAI, funny zorst but NO HSV on mufflers (I looked) and very large single outlet
off a huge rear muffler (some I see have a very small outlet) a large
"HSV Performance enhanced" sticker on the front engine cover
and
a HSV enhanced badge under the Berlina badge on rear (which I removed)
and apart from the 185i option cost on the invoice....
nothing else, no build No

all very strange......

cheers

P&A means Parts and Accesories - maybe a hard tonneau cover, set of alloy wheels or an LPG conversion. Holden/HSV changed this option stream to HBD because some people whinged about devaluing the HSV 'brand' with LPG conversions etc

all very sus/fake without a HSV build plate in the engine bay

Is it the original dealer invoice? Might have had a replacement exhaust fitted? Even the HSV ones don't last forever

my dad bought a brand new 5L Statesman VS back in 1996 and it had this plate. It was not the 185kw option, i think the plate was there because HSV did some of the options like the Sunroof - i think that was it actually. Then Holden changed this to "Holden By Design" probably to keep HSV owners happy and unique LOL - so the ute probably has some minor option not even related to performance? if it has extractors, it will be the 185kw engine

mate
i bought the car new..thats why I have the invoice
I was the one who selected the 185i option (along with FE2, LSD ABS etc)
on the dealers order form..and thats what i got invoiced for.
At the time, when the car was delivered, it had the engine bay badges
the rear panel badge, the CAI, knock sensor and twin zorst (no HSV on mufflers) but no build plate...did not even think about one at the time

and the zorst?
It had to be replaced from the cat back late last year..mufflers had rotted
(with a Walker one, not Holden..too expensive) and thats why I know the original mufflers had no HSV stamp on 'em

so
as I said..interesting

Ill pull the photos out of my old SS when i get home and dbl check, but im 99% sure it was on the boot lid just next to the number plate. It did have a HSV build plate.

Smitty, maybe ring HSV and tell them whats happened and you dont have a build plate, ask em if they have a record of your VIN# etc. Might be interesting just for the sake of it.

You could order HSV enhancements on the VR. My father had a VR Calais with HSV 185 motor. From memory there was a little badge on the back to signify HSV enhancement.

It would be nice if this still existed, for example order a HSV engine and suspension. This way you don't have to have the body kit ECT and have a badge with some value.
