View Full Version : Fuel Mileage??How much is too much??

First time user - go easy....I've had VYII SS now for about 13mths (gotta love the V8) and of course I got the usual...it will chew the juice.

Now, I know no one buys a V8 to save on fuel, but I was told that once the car was run in and I had done about 10,000k's I should notice some difference in my mileage. Between new and 15,000k's I was around 19L/100km (95% Sydney city driving). I have now done 18,000k's and the mileage on the trip computer regularly hovers around 22L/100km I dont flog it all the time and my wife, who I think still thinks she is driving her old Lancer, has the car most of the time. I get between 320 and 350k's on a tank.

I have not had any upgrades done on the engine etc and I only run on BP Ultimate from the same servo.

I did run out of juice the other day (gauge read half way between empty and 1/4 and 50km to go on the trip computer) so I'm wondering what the hell is going on - dodgy trip computer??

I have my car booked into the dealer to check the fuel gauge issue(apparently they said it has something to do with changed sulphur levels in the fuel that is now being sold) and have it re-calibrated - could this be the issue??

Any ideas, or is this just normally expected from an LS1 and I should just cop it and be happy I own one in the first place?

Welcome,
unless the dealer sold you a diesel LS1 sulphur levels have got nothing to do with anything in your car. :p

Ultimate is very good fuel, but on a stock car you will see no real benefit over regular premium, and maybe even regular ULP. Your in the city economy seems about right for an unedited car. Get it edited (do a search on "edit") and you will see better fuel economy when the car is driven the same way.

The petrol guage on VY's was dodgy and Holden did do a recall to recalibratw the gauge, not sure if your VYII is affected though.

Hope this helps.

I get around 22L/100 in the SS during city driving as well. Yes it sucks and no, v8s arent designed for driving in the city, but thems the price you pay for a v8. (i was getting around 18L/100 stock so it seems near right)

There was no great improvement in mine when it was run it, got about 15l/100km then and get about 15l/100km now, bits have been bolted on and it's been edited and i obviously drive it harder as it goes harder.

Sitting in the traffic however and it starts to go up to around 18 (or more). I do about 450km a week (so a tank of juice a week), but luckily it is with fairly minimal traffic as I go in the opposite direction to the flow.

Get around 10.2l/100km out of town. In the city, hmm can vary between 16l - 19.5l/100km. with a little spirited driving (edit and bolt ons)

vs v8 auto with only chip and extractors and all the way back.. i get around about 12 on the freeway and maybe 17 or so in city driving..
not to bad for a car that has done just over 231000kms and its on original engine, box, diff

I guess I should mention that on a trip I get 9.5 l/100km or less and that the lifetime averages are as below (yes, I do measure and log every drop and every km I do!).

VXII SS 6M (RIP) for the total 62013km before I killed it:
14.72 L/100km average (based on fuel used and km travelled)
59.62 litres per fill average
416.19 km per fill average

VYII SS 6M for the 21500km that i've done so far has the following stats:
49.61 km/h average (as displayed on dash)
14.97 L/100km average (as displayed on dash)
14.24 L/100km average (based on fuel used and km travelled)
61.82 litres per fill average
440.75 km per fill average

Both cars had the same mods and produced similar power.

Jeff.

Hi Luke,

I have a stock VY Gen III.

I get around 18 - 20 L / 100km's if I get caught in heavy traffic or stop/start driving. Turning the engine off at lights that stay red for a long time helps a bit. It seems to me that two things kill economy in the city - extended periods of idling and big revs with wide throttle openings. I am almost sure that I get better economy using Premium fuel.

I get somewhere around 14 - 15 L / 100 km's if I get a good run around the city (flowing traffic or a bit of freeway running.

My normal highway economy sits around 8.2 - 8.8 L 100 km's but i have had a best of 7.95 L / 100 km's. That's better than 35 mpg. Not bad for a V8?

Luke. I've found thats about normal for Sydney city driving.
Try setting the timer each time you fill, you'll find it will get between 9 & 10 hours running before empty. Also the slower the average speed shows on the trip computer, the more fuel you use.

I agree, if it really is 95% stop start city driving, it will be an absolute shocker. at highway cruise the consumption can be half that however.

Thanks for the info guys, seems my mileage is pretty normal. As for the fuel gauge its going into the shop on Monday....should be interesting.

just for interest sakes:
I get same as Pah for heavy city ~17 - 19, light city 14 - 15, but highway my best is 11.4/100 - only have 1800ks up so far - but I dont expect to get anywhere near the sub 10l/100 in the ava - much heavier than SS plus its running the extra axles and diff full time.

Well Have done about 83000 in the VU and weekly fill is about 48L, Getting 380 to 400 km. So that is about 13 L/100km, that is pretty much light city I s'pose living out North West Sydney, but you can find a carpark anywhere on Sydney roads.

Highway the ute loves, gets down around the 8.5-9.5 L/100km depending on terrain. Towing the Boat about 18L/100km particularly pulling up the hills on the Putty, when heading up to Glenbawne.

Edit has not really changed fuel consumption for me just the fact that there is more useable power everywhere in the rev range.

My SS has 73,000 ks on the clock and I was getting between 21 and 22litres per 100ks when I used to drive from lilyfield to the city. Now my offices have moved from thre city to West Pennant Hills and I'm getting between 15 and 16litres/100ks. I am spending more time in 3rd and 4th now than I used to. I posted a thread quite similar to yours as I thought there was somehthing wrong with my SS but its the nature of the beast. But oh what a beast it is. :D

Every 2nd person on here also kept telling me to get an edit and it will improve your economy.

Sounds about rite with your economy mate. But regarding the fuel gouge, even the VX's had the same problem. i used to own a VXii S pack.. with that I ran out of petrol when the gouge was still showing a quarter of tank and 120ks to go. Took it to Holden and they fixed it up for me. With that V6, i used to get over 700ks per tank freeway driving and just under 600ks city driving. it was a 5 speed manual, and it was great on petrol. I just dont know how to work out the liters/100ks  Any one have a formular for it???

cheers.. :D

My economy (or lack thereof) was always up around the 18-20L/100Km (average) mark pre-edit. Now that I've had the edit done I'm reading around 19-22L/100Km (average). I think it has something do do with how much I love the new rush of acceleration I've got on tap :D

On the highway though it drops down to somewhere between 9.5-11L/100Km.

just divide 100 by your k's per litre
ie. if you get 8k per litre thats 12.5 l / 100....its a crazy European system :bash:
HTH
(also, multiply your k's / litre by 2.825 = appx mpg, so 8k/l = 22.6mpg)

Also having an AWD LX8 and having done my own (assisted) edit with HP Tuners my numbers are very similar to yours, perhaps a bit lower. Recent trip to Moranbah from Brisbane netted 11.1 average going up, and 11.4 on the way back down, more a/c time on the way back down.

My average in Brisbane traffic is around 14-15 as well. Lean cruise helps a bit on the highway. When new, best highway was 14.5 over a 1000k run from Mackay to Brisbane. Editing got it down to in the 10s for winter without a/c quite easily.

A shock was the other afternoon stuck in traffic with a trailer, average 27.8 from Nudgee to Jindalee, even two days of normal driving only got me back to 17.4 before refilling today.

Lots of variables, but on the highway with a/c on, up here in Qld that is all year, most people seem to get 9-11 which is pretty good given the power and weight.

LXHATCH Has your Avalanche been edited yet or are your figures all stock?
I had an Avalanche stock tune in mine for a while and found it to be pretty good for both power and economy, further editing improved both a bit though.

When we go the SS we ran out of petrol the same weekend even though the gauge showed there was 1/4 of a tank left. We took it to Holden the next day and it was a 30 minutes recalibration.

hi GH'

mine is HSV stock Avalanche - no mods done since leaving the hsv factory/ dealers.

Easter trip returned 13l/100 on highway over 200k - return trip into head wind 14.5l/100 over 200k - all with wagon fully loaded (60l waeco, 1kva Genny, 4 adults and bags, 2 eskies etc, etc,in boot and on the roof we had chairs and table. fish rods in a non-aerodynamic roof basket)

I have a VY, is it worth getting Holden to look at the fuel gauge problem. I had it to holden today for warranty work, and it goes back next week, I might get them to look at it anyway.
