View Full Version : VZ SV6 Questions
Hi guys.
Im looking at my options at the moment.
Either a new or ex govt SV6 or an XR6 non turbo.
does anyone here have an SV6 what are they like compared to the standard VZ Exec/acclaim/berlina
apart from the 190kw engine.
at the moment the SV6 is swaying me. with a 5 Spd auto and being generaly lighter it seems like a good package. my old man has a new vz exec wagon that is pretty nice to drive. but i wanted something more sportier.
cheers

Take an XR6 for a drive, take an SV6 for a drive, ignore what is on paper and let the driving to the buying!

Exactly, and ask this question on fordforums.com.au aswell to give both cars a fair go.

Very sound advice.
Only you know what you are after and all cars have their strengths and weaknesses. Be clear about what you're after in a car and then take a long and demanding test drive of the cars that meet your needs before you put the cash on the table. And although this is a Holden Forum I think we all agree that you should be prepared to look at other cars as well.
As for the question about the Exec/Acclaim vs the SV6 I really think that the SV6 represents unbeatable value over the std. exec and acclaim package. I'm biased of course but the alloytec190 is head and shoulders over the 175 and the 5 speed gearbox is a beauty. But these are just words - take a drive.
Go the SV6.....
One of the best 6's i have driven. Mines nearly done 8k and it just keeps getting better and better.
And the (a5) tranny is sweet.

Guy at work just handed in XR6 lease car for SV6. He wasn't very happy when he found the nut on the left front radius rod loose on his new car - but build issues can happen with most new things.
He liked the XR6 enough to try to trace it and buy it - still reckons it's a fine car which never gave a moments' trouble
He also likes the SV6, especially the handling which is very direct - his wife had it for one day (primary driver with schoolage kids) and declared even though she loved the purple XR6 she loves the Impulse SV6. The SV6 rides harder bordering on too firm for the family - he's hoping it softens slightly as the shocks etc. wear in. He said the SV6 feels quicker from a roll although published figures show the Falcon quicker from stationary. The new autotrans he says is great.
One thing he did mention: the Sv6, even while still tight, is already more economical. Getting 12-13l/100km in mixed driving on it's third tank. In the same sort of driving the Falc used more - not much, but consistent.
Thanks guys,
after easter is finnished i will be taking both for a drive.
I dont mind either brand. Falcons are nice cars and so are the commodores. (we have had a few of each over the years)
There are a few things swaying me to the SV6 after reading up on both.
-Lighter than the falcon
-5 Spd Auto v's 4spd auto
-190kw v's 182kw (falcon has more torque 380nm) also heavier
-Traction Control and LSD v's one or the other on the xr6
-Cheeper to run
-Cheeper to insure (sv6 is 1200 xr6 is 2150)
-Stereo can be changed or upgraded without having to spend a fortune
450 dollars for a nice head unit and plus another few hundred for speakers (nothing over the top) just a nice setup
-Full power windows not just in the front
the only thing that i dont like about the sv6 is the bland trim. and no rear arm rest. but saving up for a calais or getting it re trimmed is no big deal.
IMO the VXII S/SS trim was much nicer.

Thanks guys,
1. Lighter than the falcon
2. 5 Spd Auto v's 4spd auto
3. Traction Control and LSD v's one or the other on the xr6
4. Cheeper to run
5. Cheeper to insure (sv6 is 1200 xr6 is 2150)
6. Stereo can be changed or upgraded without having to spend a fortune
450 dollars for a nice head unit and plus another few hundred for speakers (nothing over the top) just a nice setup
7. Full power windows not just in the front
Allow me to correct or comment on the a few things.
1. Holden tend to quote their cars dry to make them look good, add coolant, oil, fuel and you'd be suprised at the closeness of the weight, it will be less than 1 passenger.
2. The 5speed looks good, I haven't driven one so this is a definate advantage on paper at least, the BTR 4-speed is excellent though and the ZF six speed is confirmed for copperhead (new Falc in November) - food for thought.
3. The MkII XR6 can have both LSD and Trac Con, what is doesn't have is Stability Control. This is a big plus for the SV6
4. You'll find the BA is actually cheaper, including servicing, spare parts and crash repair. But we are talking only a coupleof % here so its negligable.
5. And $2150 insurance!!! I am 22y/o and my TURBO is less than that with Just Cars with mods! I think they have quoted you a TURBO!! the NA XR6 is just an XT with a body kit sports suspension and nice features. Should be less than a $1000. Check that again.
6. If your after a nice setup that nothing too in your face, then the premium audio in the BA is the go. $900 buys you a widescreen TFT full colour screen in the dash with MP3 support, there are cheap aftermarket RGB adaptors that can input HDTV straight to the screen, Xbox or DVD. Blaupunkt make them. The premium audio goes hard for a stocky, go and try one, you'll be amazed. And if you add some JL-Audio spekers to the mix you'll double the strength of the stock system. Very common mod. There is also a data mod now being developed that can show boost, RPM, inlet temp etc throught the ICC (interior Command centre) very worth while feature for enthusiest.
7. MkII XR6s have full power windows standard.
I am all for the XR6 - and the SV6, but I think you'll find the XR to be slightly better value and much better on appointment. But drive the two, keeping in mind what I have said. :)
On paper I would be buying the SV6, on drive I'd buy the XR6 - but for me I wanted the Turbo so I sacrificed the IRS, rear seats and luxuries and bought a ute for the same price but with a snail under the hood! Typical Ford, they now offer the utes with luxury pack - Lather seats, Colour ICC Premium audio, dual zone climate control, analogue clock etc. Bastards  ;)
