I'm reading your question as how long it takes to clear them off your licence .... to which the answer is 3 years from the date of each offence.

Well you start with 12 points and if you try really hard im sure you can loose em all in 1 day. If you do choose to attempt this please let me know as ill go get the camera, should be a hoot!!.

Seriously though, points are deducted from the time of the offence (not the time you pay it). It takes 3 yrs from the date of offence to get them back.

Actually Stew, that's a common mistake people make .... we actually start off with ZERO points and we are able to accrue up to 12 demerit points within a 3 year period before our licence is suspended.

And on losing the 12th point we get a letter in the mail to choose whether we want our licence suspended for 3mths or a 1 point good behavour licence for twelve months. Slip up once in that time though and it is an automatic suspension for 6 months.

Thanks Guys,

So if you can go back down to zero in 3 years, is it like, 1 point every 3 months or something ?

No, the point you were "awarded" for each offence are removed 3 years from the date of each offence.

i.e. You get done for 3 points in March 2005, then 2 points in May 2005.
The 3 point offence will expire in March 2008, and the 2 pointer in May 2008.

Yikes :-)

Ah well, i guess it's not hard to be gentle on the throttle, if you really put your mind to it , and there's always cruise control :-)

Maybe one day they should invent something that sends signals to the car through the speed limit signs and the car puts itself in cruise control automatically. I mean they can do it if they want, it's no brain surgery technologically !!

I just had a read of this page :
http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/LTASinfo.nsf/ReferenceLookup/Demerit_Point_Offences.pdf/$file/Demerit_Point_Offences.pdf

There's some groovy stuff in there, it's a good read !

True, but in addition the points only get accrued when you are found guilty of the offence and this can happen either by paying the fine or by being found guilty in court.
I am in NSW and had an incident that was 11 months before I was found guilty. The date of the points was the date of the offence, but it was 11 months before the points acrued.... which can be enough to keep your license if you are running close to 12 points..... using this method I have accrued 17 points in 12 months and not lost my license (back in the days of 1 year instead of 3)

Now,

What happens if you get your licence suspended for say 3 months. After the 3 months, do you still have your 12 demerit points ?

And i think u will find that u lose the points from the day u pay the fine not from the date of offence. Thats how i kept mine, didnt pay it for 6 months and wulla!! i have my open licence back! was shittn at the dot though!

No, when you get your licence back you start again, same as if you took the option of a twelve month good behavour licence. The slate is wiped clean :)

andrew77, your demerit points become active on the you payed the fine but are attributed to the day you committed the offence. Sounds like you got enough points back from an offence committed three years earlier before you paid the fine to cover your latest :)

L and P platers get their points back every twelve months, but they only have three to play with. On the fourth their gone :D

yep, a good system, although the rumour is NSW are trying to close it....

In NSW you get your 28 days (or is it 21) to pay the fine, then after 2 to 4 weeks you get a reminder giving you another 21 days, then after another 2 to 4 weeks you get a second reminder (and the last chance to elect court) and after another 2 to 4 weeks you get a final notice, pay up in 14 days or else ... take it to court on the second reminder, elect to plead not guilty when you get the green sheet, make up excuses for each date they give you, until finally they give you a this date, and we don't care if you can't make it........

this will buy you anywhere from 11 months (if you don't follow all steps) to nearly 2 years if you delay as much as you can... the extra costs only apply once it gets to court, and if you spin a good tale, the fine may even be lower.

Have heard the rumour/urban ledgend that if you actually overpay the fine you will be refunded the overpaid amount and the points won't be removed until you cash the cheque. Course I have never tried it and have only heard of 'friends of friends' who have done it.

Didnt get a refund and points were applied from the date of the offence.

Ha ha ha! Mate I lost 8 points in one go and I didn't need a camera...the police brought their own!!! Currently sitting through a six month ban...only 6 weeks to go. My advice...don't get caught, because 6 months off is a lot bloody longer than it sounds... :(

Have to agree. I had my licence suspended 3 years ago for only 1 month and it nearly killed me. Those points have now finally 'rolled off' and i have a clean licence with all 12 points ! And to think i actually got caught doing 157 in a 80 zone (old pacific hwy sydney). Lucky the cop wrote it down as only 40 over so i didn't get 'locked up' !

Getting your licence suspended also meant i cannot get some of the cheaper insurance around since they ask to look at your driving record. They see someone like me who has had their licence suspended and say come back in 5 years when your record might be clean.

My wife has never let me forget that i am costing us money because of my speeding record. It was a laugh at the time but geez that 1 month without a licence nearly sent me crazy. I hate trains , refuse to get buses and the wife refused to give me a lift anywhere as punishment. Bitch !!! Not that i blame her.

As others will say......if you want to speed go do a drive day , drag day etc. And if you get caught no use complaining. Cop it sweet !
