Hey guys,
I wanted to discuss something. When you dont have a garage and the drive way doesnt provide any shade and none can be erected but theres some space in the middle of the front yard, can you erect a tent of some sort to cover up the car under neath it to protect from the sun and the rain?
Has anyone done this before, pics?
Thanks

Provided that your in a normal residential area, and not in a multi-unit housing type developent, you should be able to install a temporary type sun shade, like you might buy at Kmart without needing Council consent.
Good idea to have a chat with your neighbours about it if you get on, Council's normally only ever find out about this type if thing if a neighbour complains about it.
Anything more perminant is probably going to require the submission of a DA to your local Council. You could check if your Council has an Exempt and Complying Development Control Plan (DCP), which will list certain works that can be done without any consent what-so-ever, or what can be done with only needing a compliance certificate.
You may find something there that would suit your purpose, if so build/design it to comply with these relevant provisions. Most of these exempt or complying provisions will stipulate a building line setback though, which sounds to be your problem, but you won't know for sure unless you check.
If you're interested in going the carport option, breaching the building line, you should still be able to lodge a DA and have it assessed. If you turn it sideways, and position it as close to the house as you can, thereby providing the largest building line setback possible and show screen planting infront of it, you will minimise it's streetscape impact. You could also look for similar structures with reduced building line setbacks in your immediate area to provide justification that whilst your carport breaches the building line is consistent with the established streetscape character.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
