View Full Version : Dodgy paint job

I recently had a minor accident in my GTO caused by a bus driver failing to give way on a roundabout  , and ended up with some minor damage to the front bar. I went through all the normal insurance hassles, but ended up with a whole new bar being fitted to the car. Got it back yesterday and the repairer has done a really good job with it.

Unfortunately, however, in having new paint on the bar it shows up what I can only call a dodgy paint job done by Holden. On one side of the car the paint on the bumper and front panel matches perfectly, but on the other side of the car it doesn't. It looks like the front left guard was repainted before I took ownership of the car about 18 months ago. So why didn't I notice it before? well, the paint on the bonnet and the original bar has been blended so that it matched on both sides. This was proven to me by the fella at the paint shop who did the repair (compared the colour on each side of the old bar and they are noticably different when put next to each other)

So now I'm left with a car which really shows up the fact that the bonnet and front left guard are different colours to the bumper. The painter said that the insurance company won't pay for the extra time for him to blend the paint on the bar because this would count as a "non-standard, custom paint job" , so my choices are to try to get Holden to fix it (although this seems like an unlikely outcome), or pay to have it fixed myself.

Has anyone else out there come across any problems like this with Holden paint jobs, or know of any easy way to convince them to fix it??

Holden would probably (and reasonably) come back and say that for all they know, you could have damaged that guard and had it repainted and not told them.

From memory of Holden warranties, I think paint defects are only covered for the first little while anyway, along with panel fit (up to the 1500km service I think?)

yeh, my $70,000 monaro (red hot) turned up with a dark red blotch in the middle of the bonnet. i didn't pick it up until i washed it for the first time. the local dealer sent me to their local paintshop so they could check it out. "mate, looks like this bonnet has been painted before" he said! brand bloody new, not happy jan. holden will fix it though

new cars are often touched up upon delivery, quite a few in fact.

It would be nice to know if your new car has already been in the shop for paint jobs . . especially a 70k monaro . . lol

Did you buy the car new or used?

im guessing your cars ummmmmmmmmm quicksilver! holden do not blow into the b/bar to do a repair if a fender is scratched in the factory then only the fender is sprayed ,no plastic . damaged bumpers are replaced. having said that if Toll damage a car during delivery that is their problem im unsure how they repair cars

Then I would definitely talk to the sales manager and service manager - even if you do not get satisfaction as least you will make the point that you are unhappy. Also I find the feedback from your paintshop surprising and I really would talk to the insurance company and tell them that you angry / upset / unhappy with the paint job as it does not match the current blend. No paintshop that cares about quality is going to paint to a standard code and then not blend to the existing paint color because of fading etc. I think your best chance is the insurance / paint shop route. My front bar has also been replaced and the paintshop blended perfectly to the existing age of the paint on the bonnet etc - it wasn't even discussed that it would be any different. Blending to existing aged paint is not a "custom" job , it is standard.

Hey, don't know if this will help, but a few years back my oldies got them selves a new grange and after i month or so my old man realise that the right hand side mirror only had one coat of paint on it and you could see the thru it, and after the first service there were 2 little scratches on the car, long story short, he ended up getting a full respray of the car at a panel shop of his choice... also helped that he was a panel beater by trade, so he knew what he was talking about, anyways hope this helps

Heard a story from dealer salesman about a silver gts coupe getting a full respray because none of the colours matched on the car, i have to go see about my side skirts on my ute as they have dodgy paint match. I didnt order a two tone quicksilver ute.

thanks for all the info, I will be going in to see the dealer tomorrow... still don't hold much hope of them fixing it, but at least I can let them know I'm not happy with them...

To answer some of the previous questions, it's a yellow devil GTO. I bought it from Commonwealth Motors in the ACT, where I also bought my last ride - a phantom VX SS.. up until now I have never had any issues with their service or with either of the cars, but I guess it's like the old saying goes -- nobody's perfect.

As for the insurance company insisting that blending the paint so it matches on both sides of the car is a custom job, it's just another reason why I'm cancelling my policy with GIO and won't be using them again (along with fairly expensive premiums, poor service and reluctance on their part to process a claim... it's already taken nearly two months to get this fairly minor repair done because of all their crap  )

the paint may have affected the engine somehow too, time for a rebuild :p
