I just did some quotes online for 2001 VX SS II.
RACV: $1,628.80 p/a.
AAMI: $1,608 p/a +$20 for rental car.
Now this was done for a 25 yo guy living in North Western Suburbs in Melbourne, no previous accidents etc.
Is this the best insurance companies can do for a 25 yo? I think that the price is a bit too much :(
Comments?

Not sure whether its the location, but a rating one 25 year old driver pays about $1200 normally with RACV. Which was what i was paying, but then I moved to AAMI with the variable excess and had my premium lowered to $600.
If you think thats bad, tell em you've got a HSV :D

I pay $890 with AAMI for a 2001 VX SS in Melton, rating 1.
But they have a no under 30yr old driver clause, so it may be that u r under 30 thats the prob.

2001 VX SS II.
25 yo guy
North Western Suburbs in Melbourne
There's your problem right there. That combination is red flag territory for a young V8 driver. Call these companies up again and tell them a totally different location, like inner city (Hawthorn, Malvern) etc and see what quote you get.
On a side note, I've hardly had insurance the past few years for me EA. Long story and irresponsible on my part, but when I ordered the VZ Monaro I got a quote from RACV for $1350 fully comp in Eastern Melbourne. I'm 32 yo male.
I ended up going with the fully comp insurance provided by my leasing company which ended up being $750.
Cheers,
Steve.
Yeah, it sucks. Been on maximum NCB for as long as I can remember, never had a claim, and that's the best anyone seems to be able to do.
Good luck with yours.

My insurance as a 25 yo driver for a VT2 SS was $950 with AAMI. I crash 1 year ago. No speeding fines in last 5 years. Currently had to go with RACV so I can pay by the month but am planning to go back to AAMI as they always took care of me, very good service etc.

22K a year pre tax. 50% residual over 3 years. Cost is based on a 54K car so I am guessing that a brand new VZ would of set me back around 25K p.a.

Car registration details will be an easy check for the insurance co. And if your going to go down the track of lying to the insurance co, dont worry about getting it in the first place because you've already given them a reason to claim non disclosure and not pay. But they'll happily accept your premiums in the meantime. :D

I used to pay $2500 a year for my VTIIR8 clubby when i was 22 on a rating 1 with no prior accidents, it dropped a couple dollars each year until then. However since my recent accident i still kept my rating 1 due to rating 1 protection. Now when i ask for a quote i get the same price quotes.
From extensive research i know this for a fact:
The area is a contributing factor, but not so much where it will add hundreds to your policy.
The most contributing factor is how many times that car has been in an accident, so chances are if you want a Holden or HSV you will be paying heaps. Because there are so many around, they are bound to be in accidents more than lets say a saab or VW.
Here are some rough estimates of cars i want, im 24 still on a rating 1
1990 Celica convertable ST183, cost $13500 = policy: $1020
1993 SAAB 900i Convertible, cost $12500 = plicy: $1321
VXSSII 2001, cost $26500 = policy $1680
VXII R8 Clubsport, cost $32000 = policy $2400

Ok I just did Just Cars quote and they came out the cheapest but theres a catch.
Just Cars: $1390 p/a unlimited mods (legal). But you pay $850 excess if its your fault or the car has been stolen.
I think this is probably the best bet so far considering mods etc.

Yeah but their hidden punch is in the excess - I think you will find that Just Cars excess (on any claim) will be approx. $1600 for you.
Also there may be unlimited mods but each mod hikes up the premium you will pay.

Ok it was broken down as follows (cant remember EXACT prices but these are pretty spot on)
In the event of a claim you must pay;
Under 25 excess = $400 (or there abouts)
General Excess = $400 (or there abouts)
Additional Excess (this is the BS excess they add for fast cars) = $800 (exact)
Adds up to approx $1600

I've just been doing this with my Sv8 in the past week & it appears that some companies do like them (espically if you are under the age of 30), due to the fact that younger driver seem to be buying them. Apparently they think that an under 30 with a V8 is a bad idea  !!!
It's amazing as when I was growing up 25 was the magical age, now it's fast becoming 30+.......
I tried Shannons & got a quote of $958 ($250 more than my current insurance) & finally i ended up at AAMI for $577.

Mmmm, if you put in a claim, they have every right to say,
"Insurance, what insurance?" And knowing insurance companies
they most likely will. Not worth it imho. Good luck though :)
Insurance ...... Balance premium over coverage. Cause some will go for the cheapest and have the 'lesser' quality for the insurance package.
Ask your self a few quetions in what coverage do you want for your vehicle.
Agreed value or Market value
Choise of repairer or Preferred repairer by the ins. comp
Limits on the hourly rate to the repairer - paint work quality and parts used
Modified or unmodified coverage (and to what modification?)
You can always go for the cheap insurance if that is the main focus of coverage criteria for you, otherwise ensure the actual coverage you have meets ya driving needs and just be happy to pay the appropriate premium.
Cheers,
Dane

I've got no modifications on my vehicle. No bolt ons, exhaust, cai, altered maf pipes, nothing. The only thing what I do have over the standard, is maf edit. I tried to explain to the girl in the insurance company that the computer program in the vehicle is modified, she asked me is it 'chipped' and I said no. She said there is no other criteria for vehicle software modification, and therefore basically, go for your hardest. I would be allowed to have 3 mods for the standard price though.

Shannons - 1200 a year comprehensive - because my wife is under 30 - mods - intake, fuel, bigger engine, different gearbox, bigger wheels, bigger tyres, edit, suspension, agreed value set at 30K ... damm good price I think especially with all the benefits as Dane has pointed out above ...
NRMA/AAMI/ALLIANZ/Suncorp wouldnt insure my car with the above mods due to wife's age !

Fair enough mate, I guess they would be hard pressed to find the

i pay $1380 for a 2004 VY SS through the NRMA's Victorian branded insurance company which is part of IAG. This is on my novated lease so the actual cost from my pocket is like 680. This is for the car being garaged in Casula in SW Sydney which is a bit of a high risk area for theft. I am 35 and have a max NCB. Also have the house and contents with IAG so there is a multipolicy discount.
we bought a ZC Vectra in December 04 for my wife to drive. Previously we had a 2001 Astra which was with GIO at this location and to insure it for 21000 it cost about $900 a year. The policy expires each April so when we changed it over they charged us a pro-rata diference from Dec-Apr of $7.70 to insure the vectra for $39k.
Now i asked the girl if she was sure her figures were correct and she said yes - the vectra has more active safety features than the astra and was lower risk so the policy was about the same over the year ($30 more a year) for an extra $18k in coverage.
Anyway the renewal arrived in the mail last week - i opened it expecting a yearly policy of about $950 but was a little shocked to see it was $1750. Rang GIO and told them i was surprised and the serf on the phone told me it was because the underwriters must have deemed the car more expensive to insure as its risk was now higher. theyre value was now only $33k ($6k depreciation in 4 mths for double the premium). Absolutely nothing else had changed with us - no tickets, no accos. My wife is 33 and we are Gold members with GIO.
So i told them to stick it up their arses and rang the SunCorp complaints line in QLD to register my dissatisfaction with the whole debarcle. The called back the same day and told me it was because the lady who transferred the cover from the Astra to the Vectra had made an error and the amount should have been a LOT more than $7.70 for the four months.
Not my problem i told them - they failed to disclose the correct amount and i based my decision to insure wiht them on that incorrect disclosure. Further i called APRA, the Insurance Ombudsman and ASIC to report the 100% arbitary increase. I told Suncorp this and miraculously they reduced the quote on the spot to $1430 with an agreed value of $33800. This didnt include a CTP discount of $50 making the quote about $1380 but still a lot more than $950 as expected.
Called IAG and got a quote of $1399 for the car for $37k agreed value. Only problem is i need to use a preferred repairer. The good thing is that their preferred repairer is my only choice for fixing dings in my cars - Sefton Smash.
So i guess IAG gets our business this time around. I checked with some other ppl i know who own Vectras and the $1300 - $1500 premium is about right. Funny how they were able to slash $350 off a premium when i mention the Insurance Ombudsman, APRA and ASIC isnt it?
With insurance i like to remember this term... "even when you win you LOSE"
