I have done a bit of interstate travelling of late and I cant help but notice the prevalence of custom plates in Qld and Victoria compared to NSW. In Victoria it seemed that every second car has a custom plate.
It is also evident on this site!!
I am guessing there is a massive price difference in custom number plates between the states...either that, or we in NSW are cheapskates.. Can respective custom plate holders in the various states advise the initial cost and annual costs above that of standard plates.
cheers

Ive got QLD "Personalised Plates" (Up here we also have prestege plates - $$$) which in my case are a combination of 3 letters-2 numbers (HDN-55). You can also have 2 numbers-3 letters. They cost me $395 outright. The plates to not have to be associated with a car and there is no additional costs to use them, just need to inform QLD transport and surrender the old plates.

Yep, here in QLD personalised plates cost a once only fee of $395. These include your issued number on a range of backgrounds/colour choices or a combination of 2 numbers and 3 letters (or 3 letters and 2 numbers) with the same background/colour options. I think there is also an option to get 3 and 3 but not sure of the cost.
To get a prestige plate (and letter/number combo up to 6 wide) will cost roughly $2200 give or take (once off).

From memory, personalised plates in the NT are a one off fee of $100.00 for up to 7 letters. I got mine for $50.00 a five years ago. The price has doubled since then...
As another NT forum member once said "Personalised plates in the NT are like bumholes, every body has one..." (or words to that effect).

I just got the company car rego renewal done and the custom premium plates (black text / white background) were $400. Not sure what the initial cost was at the time though but have a look here http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/numberplates/pricelist.html
Hope this helps

Go figure.
A little off topic, but there is a vy S in town here that has custom qld plates on it. I'm sure i saw this car in Moranbah when i was there too.

It seems to depend on what you want on your plate. If you want your name on your plate, that's $627. If you want a "unique plate" which includes "car models, occupations, nicknames and combinations of letters and numbers", that's $1894. Or if you want to use a "combination of letters and numbers to create a plate describing the make of your vehicle", that'll be $3531. Or you can put the name of your business on a plate for $366-$677.
One of the cool things about ACT plates though is that you can get logos and slogans put on them, so instead of having the usual "Canberra - The Nation's Capital" across the bottom, you could have something else.
Seems the thing to do would be either to change your name by deed poll to whatever you want on your plate, or start a $2 shelf company and get business plates. Hi, my name's Monaro and I'm the sole director of CV8 Pty Ltd, can I have some number plates please? :)

Just off the topic, i was discussing with a few mates while we were having a few ( ) about which state has the best plates that suit any type of car, we were trying to work out which state has the best color and letter, number configurations....Anyone want to add as to which state they believe has the best plate color, letter, number configuaration???.....we concluded vic has the better colors of white on black, green on white rather than the black on yellows' etc etc,

I've got black on white - it suits the car perfectly (my car is black)
I think ochre on white is a good colour cobo as well.

Funny this topic came up today, as I just received notice from VicRoads some plate fees are going up as of Monday 4th April. These all happen to be custom type plates too  C&P of VR info below. Note mention of 7 digit plates at bottom.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
ATTENTION ALL REGISTRATION STAFF
As advised in the Weekly Briefings of 29th March, fees for some plates are
increasing as from Monday April 4 2005.
The increase applies to new plates only, not duplicates.
Plate type Price to April 2 2005 / New price as from April 4 2005
Custom Plates (4-6 characters) $310 / $395
Custom Plates (3 characters) $415 / $495
Personalised Plates $155 / $195
Future General Issue[OUT OF SEQUENCE] $163.60 /$195

When will VicRoads go to seven letters?
This won’t happen for a number of years, as VicRoads systems can only cater
for six characters.

I payed $310 for my Victorian 6 letter plates and they are mine forever not rented... http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrpdf/randl/NumberPlateFees05_2.pdf
It would be good if Victoria let you have a comination of numbers and letters not just letters followed by numbers, you are not allowed to have somthing like.. eg: HSV2NV...
It was also better back when personalised plates here came with the slogan "VICTORIA - ON THE MOVE"
There are a couple of sites selling plates...

www.qldnumberplates.com.au

Yeah, I own my plates. I'm pretty sure it's still the same now.
So only a once off fee, besides w.a doesnt have an RTA, but rather the Department of Transport.
