In the Northern Territory, so perfectly legal!

Just got back from my trip. Sydney to Adelaide for 4 days of Clipsal 500 then a nice drive to Ayers Rock and Alice Springs. A nice 6700km return journey.

I had to have a high speed run in the NT. Why else would I bother going there? I took it easy at first. 210 in 6th without pushing hard. I started cruising at 150. Then 160, and ended up cruising comfortably at 180km/h. It takes a lot of concentration traveling at that speed. No steering with one hand or day dreaming like you can at 110! I had a go at a high speed run when travelling south from Alice towards Kulgera. I managed to hit 250km/h in 5th. It had more left but that speed is just too scary! When I hit 250 I backed off. My passenger was sweating bullets and when I joked about another high speed run I nearly copped a slap to the head!

I averaged 11.1 L/100km for the whole trip. My best was 9.7L/100km between Gundagai and my turnoff from the Hume Hwy at Liverpool. I found I was using about 10.5L/100km at 115km/h, 13.5 at 150, 15 at 160, and 20 at 180. All instantaneous reading from the trip computer. It's amazing how quickly you cover the distance when cruising at 180 but at 20L/100 it wouldn't give a very good cruising range.

I found Premium Fuel everywhere I stopped. The only time I needed octane booster was when the only servo in Coober Pedy that sells premium decided he doesn't like to open on public holidays  They even had BP Ultimate in Port Augusta and Alice Springs, but I'd already filled up before driving past the BP in both places

Overall it was a very good trip. That big rock was even worth looking at.

Looking forward to my own speed run in late June when I head across to Darwin for the V8's from T'ville. :D
Just wish I'd bought my ride when I was living there 18 mths ago! Should do the trip in 2 days comfortably and cant wait to put the QLD border behind me after Camooweal, miss cruising at 140 up to Darwin for w'ends in my old 80 series cruiser, will be doing it in real style this time!!. I assume the Ultimate hi octane fuel is available to Three ways as per your post, will fend for myself north of there. I dont think demerit points have been put back on the table since I left, have they? Was excellent to leave with a full compliment again, have lost a few since settling in QLD though (police state).
I'm sure you feel like me and would reccomend the trip to everyone! Beware the grey nomads though! Will have my own travel post when I get back mid July after catching up with some mates for a spot of fishing through Jabiru and Cooinda, will have the Pacemaker tri-y's on and CAI upgraded shortly for the trip. Cant wait to scratch that travel bug itch. Go the V8's! :p

Red VY SS series 2 Ute with rear cover in red, still original condition but not for long. I am fairly new to this forum thing and beginning to realise how much potential these engines have, also learning alot more about my car at same time. May also be joining local LS 1 club. What's your ride?

ignore my post in the other thread carneb. No wonder we didn't catch up, you were still 1500km away in Alice Springs.

Fire Truck, if you're heading to Darwin be sure to post a Discussion topic in the NT Cruise thread so you can catch up with the local LS1 members.

I have a VY 924 ex cop car, white, 15" steelies, Black Cannondale sticker on the rear windscreen, and a very sneaky set of V6 badges on the side. Keep an eye open and if you see me pull me over for a chat.

An NT cop once told me if you can afford financially to speed, fill your boots!
Never heard of demerit points, what planet have you been living on???? :booty:

Nice work carneb. Planning my own trip to NT with dad in a few months, and I plan to do the exact same thing. :)

Don't know if mine will safely hit 250km/h though...being a Calais with standard suspension and no body kit (except the spoiler). We'll see how it goes (I'm taking a GPS receiver too :D).

Any tips you can give when doing these high speed runs? Obviously check the tyre pressures and keep an eye out for wildlife. Did you run nitrogen in the tyres? Anything else?

Cheers,
- Febs.

Last year when i visited Europe i decided to hit the German Autobahn. Started off at 180 which was the cruising speeds most vehicles seemed to be doing. Then a watched in utter belief as a porsche 911 Turbo and an Audi A8 flew past me causing the whole car to violenty shake. (the weather was appauling and it was raining buckets). Visibility 100m

When the weather cleared, i took it to the 240-250 speed limiter on the Audi and sat there for the 3 hour trip towards austria.

Driving on those roads, you dont really notice your doing 250 clicks and it becomes comfortable. My only advise is to watch your speed exiting the highways as it becomes severely deceiving. i.e- you might think your slow enough to do the turn, but infact your hitting 180 clicks and not the 60 you think your doing. Perception is a real bitch in high speed driving

Since I have been up here I have found the biggest
danger whilst high speed travelling is other motorists,
especially the kind that wait and watch until they think
you are close enough and then pull out whilst you are
travelling at 170+ kph.

Check the thread in Nawdy's post. Thats where I asked and got some tips. I made sure I was on a long flat stretch so I could see a long way into the distance. I'd hate to go over a crest and see a dead roo in the middle of the road or a car/bus/roadtrain.
