Putting all bias aside, what do yall think is the best sounding injected V8 out of Ford / Holden.

My Choice
A) BOSS 5.4L 1st
B) LS1 4th
C) Ford 5.0L 3rd
D) Holden 5.0L 2nd
E) LS2 Do know havnt heard any yet so its 5th

I posted this on FordForums.com.au. The results where interesting, Ford leading of course but with strong support for the Holden 5.0L. Now I wanna see if it swings the other way being a majority of the members here own LS1s.......it's quite obvious it will, but still interested to see what yall comments are. It would be easier if I could post a poll but theres no option for it at the bottom of this page.

Here's the thread http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=6583&page=1 If your a member you can vote on the poll.

Please no comments FST57L. :D :D :D

Best I have heard so far is CAMMED LS1 (not mine yet),
still yet to hear a decent sounding BOSS motor, I do
keep hearing how good they are supposed to sound though.

Actually it would be better to have a comparison sound clip of each as each exhaust/header/induction combo will lead to slightly different sounds from each engine.

It's a bit of a tuffy as I haven't heard the others on any sort of comparitive basis, usually it's just a brief cruise past me.

The 5.4 Boss sounds pretty good but I can't rank them for fear of my car blowing up!

You can make a stocker idle like a 427 if you know how. Difillipo exahusts make these LS1s sound pretty tough at idle too.

The LS2 GTO sometimes driven by a local is the closest Holden I've heard to the stock Boss260/290 and it does sound far better then any LS1 I've ever heard, so much better and louder in fact to make me look round and see what it was.

Its all about the correct balance of air, fuel and spark to match the idle characteristics you want. For example, a mate of mine loves the lumpy shake and thump of an old school V8 and was missing it even with his cammed 220/224 SS. With a bit of tweaking to stop stalling in reverse and chopping up the idle it now rocks side to side to an extent only a woman can truly appreciate. ;)

Its harder on a stocker to get a choppy idle due to higher cylinder pressures and improved culinder filling. This is the best comparison I could come up with. Sorry for the poor sound quality - I tried cleaning it up. The lumpier stock idle has a bit of sideways shake in it too. This took me all of 15 mins to program so no doubt could be made much more lumpier if I fiddled with the TB and such - and didn't have the stocker cam.

That actually sounds really good ... that is what I would wish mine to sound like at idle ... I agree with your mate about the old school sound ... my old beast used to rock from side to side and idle across a 300rpm range 650-950 ...

So how do you tune it like that, software wise??

cheers

That's not idling that called hunting. My stroker Group A engine idled with a strong lope at a rock steady 750 RPM all with a wade 1147C (235@50, 0.530", 110 LSA)

No hunting on my 2 samples. Idle was rock steady at 575RPM in gear for the lumpy attempt and 550RPM for the stocker. Hunting is caused by poor fuelling and airflow calibrations. Both idles my O2 sensors were nice and happy and the idle airflow was trimmed.

Even with a lumpy cam you can get a lumpy idle with no hunting. PM Divjak for proof.

The only trick I used in my samples was to simulate lumpy cams by forcing the spark undershoot and overshoot to insane values so that you get fluctuations of +/-6* or more timing at idle. Lowering the airflow will create more of a lope, as will lowering the base idle spark and consequent RPM. All in all, I tried to attack the cylinder fill at idle.

I have found that finding the base spark and RPM that the car WANTS to idle at produces the best results for stable idle. You can then modify from there, within reason, to modulate the note and idle characteristics to suit.

ok ... mine was a Heatseeker cam ... effective range was 4500-7500 rpm, not real sure on the other specs other to say it was fun to get off the line and go ... :)

My totally biased opinion is for a nice twin zorst of some Pacemaker try y's on a Holden 5.7 Stroker or 5.0 - Yummy. Add a trick cam and twin throttles and your in aural heaven!

That said I reckon the LS1 gets a rough rap, I've always loved the sound of a zorsted LS1 at 6,000 rpm........

The guy in the next workshop to mine has a BA GT with the full Herrod exhaust treatment - sounds nice but very similar to an LS1, just not as muffled.....

Had a Cammed BT1 pack VS V8.

The idle was stable, very deep and gee did it sound hot for what it was. It sounded very tough for a tiny 144rwkws and a lot of people were sure it was a 355 stroker with a decent cam. Yep, I have to say the 5.0l injected with cam sounded awesome. Hard to beat it.

The LS1 is up next for a nice cam and I will attempt to get it sounding as tough or tougher then the old 5.0 hopefully.

Will have to post a wav of it when its all done.

Yep I couldn't agree with you more HRT,I just got my stroker back lastweek
and even with off the shelf Genies and twin 2 1/4 pipes this thing sounds
mean as when it's idling  I've even got me a VY HSV resinator to put

My mates got a new BA GT it sounds good a little lumpy but I still thought that my 5.7 VY with twin 3" DiFillipo sounded better and have been told by others that its the best sounding V8 in town. But last week I had Phonsy fit one of his 11 second cam packages with an OTRCAI and f@#k me it rocks the car and now everywhere I go people ask me whats under the bonnet. Im wrapped close to 300 at the treads thanks phonsy :D

B) Holden 5.0L
C) Ford 5.0L
D) Boss
E) LS1/LS2 equal (don't know what the difference in sound is)

LS1's can sound pretty good, but they don't have that deep throbbing sound like 5.0L's do

Still havent heard an unopened LS1 that sounded as good as my VX but I can at least admit that most of the BA's coming out of Herrod sound awesome....
The injected Holden V8's sound much better then a Gen3 with the same mods and a decent exhaust.

2nd - Holden V8
3rd - Windsor
4th - LS2
5th - LS1

The sound is unlike any Chev motor I have heard before, basically sounds like a Boss 290 but with a much deeper bellow.....real nice.

Another vote for the Aussie 304.

The LS1 is a funny one, maybe because it's an alloy block or the firing order but they sound awful at idle and low revs. Once they get up around 4000 RPM though they really come into there own and sound fantastic.

Just my 0.02.
