While I support any move to continue the V8 Supercar race in NZ, I just don't like street circuits at all. I know there are spin off benefits, but in my opinion, the funds required to prepare Wellington for this race are dis-proportionate to the overall cost, i.e. uncounted loss of revenue from businesses affected.
Why don't they upgrade Manfield?
It's reasonably accessible to most of the North Island and is TV compliant as well as being a good flowing track.
I am attending the race at Pukekohe this weekend with mixed feelings, I can't believe that it is actually the last one. I have attended races at Puke for 35 years, it's sad.

Present Taupo track is 1.4km long, so its, ahhhhh, a bit tight :p

They have (had) upgrade plans but lost the funding, they are having another go at the funding ATM. Taupo is to far away from a population base as well. It's Wellington street race or nothing by the looks. Like Thumper I would prefer to see Manfield ugraded, its a good track with some banked corners = 2 racing lines thru the corner = overtaking. Plus you can see the whole track from one embankment.

Cheers,

Gordie

ATM this track is a shortened version of what has been proposed as a F1 spec track, no way will it support the V8's until the extensions are completed.
I have lost track of what is happening with it, I know the local council were right behind it, though.
There is a new track proposed in North Waikato/Sth Auckland called Hampton Downs, and they are selling conditional properties at the site, for executive housing etc.
Like it suggests, there are several alternatives to the city streets thing, but not for a couple of years.

I have seen the layout of Hampton Downs, it's good, not an outright speed track like Pukekohe. Also has provision for a smaller club track. Due to be opened 2007. If someone can give me a mobile phone no for a camera phone who can post up, i will text them the photo layout. Taupo is at the moment too small for the NZ v8's let alone Supercars, even if the front straight does get lengthened it'll still be too small, plus it couldn't hold the amount of people that go. For those that don't know Taupo track is in a paddock, mind the sheep shit.

I think you would find the (local) politicians would give a HUGE no for a major event at Taupo.. they are already struggling with infrastructure (a delibrate direction to keep it "undeveloped") to cope with the current tourist demand.

Having spent a fair bit of time in Taupo (my partner was there for 16years) the last thing it needs is to atract more hoons!!

I also agrre that street circuits ust don't cut it, even the Indy circuit is boring with bugger all passing really. NZ has probably one of the richest motor racing histories going, and IMO would be greatly benefinted by bringing a current track (or new track) up to international standards - who is to say there could not be a NZ round of INDY or F1 down the track??

LS1_VN - just a quick note - My first trip to the Mount about a year ago - I have never seen more boys and their toys in my life - the main drag along the beach leaves surfers Paradise esplanade for dead - just a bloody crazy place....

Street curcuits get all the money in though. Which do you think would be the highest grossing current event? With Adelaide and Surfers around, it certainly isnt Bathurst.

pagey, Fri-Sat nights after 10pm it fills up to over 200 people cars everywhere, mostly rice but good as an eye opener to just watch.
No takers on the camera ph so as to have Hampton Downs circuit up on screen.

Really, Bathurst is a dedicated event for the V8's with support events for other racing groups. Surfers & Adelaide(?) are just support events, so the numbers dont really count for the V8's there.

Support? Equal billing on Surfers...and Adelaide...dedicated to V8's
