I'm looking at buying a VT commodore and was searching around the car yard sites etc. Quick question: does the series I have the Australian V8 and the series II have the Chev engine? Because I have found that most series I's have a 5.0 engine and the series II's have the 5.7. I need to know if this is the case or if its just a typo or something thanks

Yep all series 2 VT and onwards V8's have the LS1, excluding the VZ HSV's which have the LS2.

Some HSVs will have a 5.7 such as the GTS. Its a stroked version of the Australian 5.0.

That will only be the Series 1. A simple check under the hood will tell you if its an LS1 or a 5/5.7L Aussie block.
The stroker was available in the 220i Senator & GTS. It also came with a 6 speed, where the other VT Series 1 still have the 5 speed block (i think, someone else can hopefully confirm this!)
Hope this helps mate
