VFACTS INDUSTRY SUMMARY - DECEMBER 2004
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries issues the following summary for the retail sales performance of the automotive industry for December 2004, based on the industry's standard retail report, VFACTS.
New vehicle sales for full year 2004 reached 955,229 units, and in doing so established a new record mark for the Australian automotive industry. The previous record of 909,811 was set last year.
The December 2004 market is up, 1,194 vehicles or 1.5% when compared with, December 2003 (77,786 vehicles). This establishes a new record mark for a December month eclipsing the previous mark set last year. With December 2004 having 0.1of a selling day more than December 2003 (25.0), this equates to an increase of 35.2 vehicles per day or 1.1%.
The December 2004 industry volume of 78,980 new vehicles is a reduction of 5,355 or 6.3% on November (84,335 vehicles). With December (25.1) having 0.8 less of a selling day than November (25.9), this equates to a reduction, in daily rate terms of 134.9 vehicles per day or 4.1%.
The Passenger Vehicle Market fell by 1,161 vehicles (-2.3%) over the same month last year, whilst the SUV Market increased by 1,015 (7.6%), the Light Truck Market, increased by 877 vehicles (7.1%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market increased by 463 vehicles (20.1%) over December 2003.
Toyota was market leader in December, followed by Holden and Ford. Market leadership for full year 2004 went to Toyota with a volume of 201,737 and a share of 21.1%.
The full year 2004 Total New Vehicle Market of 955,229 vehicles is an increase of 45,418 vehicle sales or 5.0% on the 2003 volume. With same number of selling days available in 2004, the daily selling rate increased by 149.9 vehicles per day. The Passenger Market at 589,985 vehicles is up by 1,474 vehicles (0.3%). Mixed results by segment show that, significant increases were returned by, the Prestige car segment, up 7,912 (27.1%); the Light car segment, up 7,228(9.4%); the Small car segment, up 5,509 (3.1%); the People Mover segment, up 3,380 (28.5%) and the Medium car segment, up 2,819 (6.0%), whilst the Large car segment, down 21,846 (-10.7%); the Luxury car segment, down 2,256 (-6.6%) and the Sports car segment, down 1,272 (-12.5%) failed to improve on last year. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market at 173,087 vehicles finished 22,509 vehicles (14.9%) ahead, versus full year 2003. Significant growth occurred in SUV Medium segment, up 21,940 (57.4%) and the SUV Luxury segment, up 1,826 (15.3%), with the SUV Compact segment, slightly ahead, up 178 (0.2%), whilst the SUV Large segment, down 1,435 (-5.7%) failed to achieve last years volume. The Light Truck Market at 163,676 vehicles finished 17,087 vehicles (11.7%) ahead, of full year 2003. With the exception of the Light Bus segment, down 243 (-13.6%), all segments experienced significant growth, with the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2, up 8,332 (11.7%); the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4 segment, up 8,022 (15.8%); the Van segment, up 789 (3.7%) and the 2.5 Tonne Truck segment, up 187 (11.9%). The Heavy Truck Market at 28,481 vehicles finished the year ahead of the 2003 full year market, by 4,348 vehicles or 18.0%.
MONTHLY RESULTS
The Passenger Vehicle Market is down 1,161 vehicles or 2.3%. Mixed results by segment show losses returned in the Large car segment, down 1,406 (-8.6%); the Prestige car segment, down 421 (-13.3%); the Luxury car segment, down 352 (-14.1%) and the Small car segment, down 143 (-0.9%), whilst the Light car segment, up 403 (6.4%); the People Mover segment, up 310 (33.1%); the Medium car segment, up 266 (6.0%) and the Sports car segment up 182 (26.8%), improved on the same month last year. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market is up 1,015 vehicles or 7.6% versus December 2003. Mixed results were returned by segment, with the SUV Medium segment, up 1,878 (48.0%), whilst the Compact segment, down 460(-7.5%); the SUV Large segment, down 209 (-10.2%) and the SUV Luxury segment, down 194 (-16.3%), failed to achieve the December 2003 volume. The Light Truck Market is up by 877 vehicles or 7.1% on December 2003, with the Pickup Cab Chassis 4x2 segment, up 481(7.9%); the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4 segment, up 371 (8.6%) and the Van segment, up 40(2.3%) and the 2.5 Tonne truck segment, up 18 (15.9%), whilst the Light bus segment, down 33 (-7.5%), failed to achieve December 2003 volumes. The Heavy Truck Market is up 463 vehicles or 20.1%, when compared with the same month in 2003.
TOP TEN MAKES
Toyota achieved the top sales position in the December monthly market with 16,974 vehicles, ahead of Holden with 13,965 and Ford third with 12,436. Toyota, with a market share of 21.1%, gained the market leadership crown for 2004. Holden's December result sees it in second position with a market share of 18.6%, with Ford's market share of 14.2% placing it third. Nissan, with sales of 5,465 and a market share of 6.7%, hold fourth position. Mitsubishi sold 5,064 vehicles in December and with a share of 6.0%, are in fifth place ahead of Mazda, on 5.8% market share.

New vehicle sales for the full year 2002 reached 824,309 units, and in doing so established a new record mark for the Australian automotive industry. The previous record was set at 807,669 in 1998.
The December 2002 industry volume of 67,973 new vehicles is a reduction of 3,602 or 5.0% on November (71,775 vehicles). With December (24.0) having 1.7 selling days less than November (25.7), this translates to an increase, in daily rate terms of 47.2 vehicles per day or 1.7%.
The December 2002 market is down, 1,058 vehicles or 1.5% when compared with, December 2001 (69,031 vehicles). With December 2002 having the same number of selling days as December 2001, this equates to a reduction of 44.1 vehicles per day.
The Passenger Vehicle Market fell by 2,876 vehicles (-6.0%) over the same month last year, whilst the Light Truck Market, increased by 1,504 vehicles (7.9%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market increased by 314 vehicles (18.2%) over December 2001.

MONTHLY RESULTS
The Passenger Vehicle Market is down 2,876 vehicles or 6.0%. Poor performances by the Small Car segment, down 1,679 (-11.8%) and the Light Car segment, down 1,665 (-23.1%), coupled with losses by Prestige Car segment, down 229 (-10.6%) and the Large Car segment down 173 (-1.1%), accounted for this disappointing result. On the positive side good performances were recorded in the Medium Car segment, up 483 (15.2%); the People mover segment, up 163 (12.7%); the Luxury Car segment up 137 (4.8%) and the Sports Car segment, up 92(11.2%). The Light Truck Market is up 1,504 vehicles or 7.9% versus December 2001, results were mixed with increased volumes returned by the ATW Compact segment, up 1,308 (39.3%); the Van segment, up 389 (34.2%); the ATW Large segment, up 215 (9.5%); the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4 segment, up 156 (4.9%) and the 2.5 Tonne Truck segment, up 7 (7.9%). Whilst reduced volumes were returned in the ATW Medium segment, down 530 (-12.4%); the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2 segment, down 30(-0.6%) & the Light Bus segment, down 11 (-8.9%). The Heavy Truck Market is up 314 vehicles or 18.2%, when compared with the same month in 2001.

Toyota gained the top sales position in the December monthly market with 14,046 vehicles, ahead of Holden with 13,001 and Ford third with 9,432. Holden, however, with a year-to-date market share of 21.6%, are the market leader for full year 2002. Toyota’s December result sees them in second position with a market share of 19.2%, with Ford's market share of 13.2% placing them third. Mitsubishi, with sales 6,147 and with a market share of 8.2%, hold fourth position. Nissan sold 4,053 vehicles in December and with a share of 6.1%, are in fifth place ahead of Mazda, on 4.7% market share.

VFACTS INDUSTRY SUMMARY - DECEMBER 2001
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries issues the following summary for the retail sales performance of the automotive industry for December 2001, based on the industry’s standard retail report, VFACTS.
New vehicle sales for the full year 2001 reached 772,681 units, the fourth largest market ever achieved and a strong result for the Australian industry in spite of international uncertainties.
New vehicle demand remains firm, encouraged by Australia's economic resilience and a high level of competitive vehicle brand activity with large numbers of new model releases featuring improved specification levels and value for money packages.
The Chief Executive of the FCAI, Mr Peter Sturrock said today "the very pleasing new vehicle sales result for 2001 again demonstrates strong buyer demand for attractively priced new models assisted by all-time low interest rates. Buyers show their keenness to acquire models featuring improved technical specifications and performance with more fuel efficient engines."
Mr Sturrock predicted that new vehicle demand in 2002 would remain keen and sales for the new year were expected to reach 780,000 vehicles.
The new vehicle market over the past five years has grown by 19% from 650,000 units in 1996 to just under 773,000 units in 2001. During the same period automotive exports of cars, engines and components have jumped from $2.25 billion to an anticipated $5 billion for 2001.
The December 2001 industry volume of 69,031 new vehicles is a reduction of 1,731 (-2.4%) on November (70,762 vehicles). With December (24.0) having 1.7 selling days less than November (25.7), this translates to an increase, in daily rate terms of 122.9 vehicles per day or 4.5%.
The December 2001 market is down, 7,634 vehicles or 10.0% when compared with, December 2000 (76,665 vehicles). With December 2001 having 1 less selling day December 2000, this equates to a reduction of 6.2% or 190.3 vehicles per day.
The Passenger Vehicle Market fell by 6,618 vehicles (-12.1%) over the same month last year, while the Light Truck Market, fell by 983 vehicles (-4.9%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market fell 33 vehicles (-1.9%) over December 2000.
Holden was market leader in December, followed by Toyota and Ford. Market leadership for full year 2001 went to Holden with a volume of 165,579 and a share of 21.4%.
FULL YEAR 2001 VS FULL YEAR 2000
The full year 2001 Total Market volume of 772,681 fell 14,419 vehicle sales or 1.8% short of the 2000 Total Market volume. With 0.9 less of a selling day available in 2001, the daily selling rate fell by 39.6 vehicles per day or 1.5%. The Passenger Market at 529,452 vehicles is down by 24,221 vehicles (-4.4%). Mixed results by segment show that, increases were achieved by, the Small car segment, up 7,967 (5.2%); Luxury car segment, up 4,419 (22.9%); the Sports car segment, up 954 (12.1%) and People Mover, up 404 (3.4%). Whilst the Light car segment, down 23,356 (-25.9%); Large car segment, down 8,463 (-4.3%); the Medium car segment, down 3,663 (-8.7%) and the Prestige car segment, down 2,483 (-8.4%), failed to achieve their year 2000 volume levels. The Light Truck Market at 224,270 vehicles finished the year, 10,428 vehicles (4.9%) ahead, of the year 2000 market. The majority of this improvement can be attributed to two segments, the ATW Medium segment, up 11,373 vehicles (28.3%) and Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2, up 6,541(13.8%), with a modest contribution from the 2.5 Tonne Truck segment, up 72 (11.5%). The following segments returned losses, the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4 segment, down 4,162 vehicles (-10.5%); the Van segment, down 2,136 (-11.2%); the ATW Compact segment, down 638 (-1.6%); the Light bus segment, down 613 (-32.4%) and the ATW Large segment, down 9 (-0.0%), versus their 2000 result. The Heavy Truck Market at 18,959 vehicles fell below the volume returned full year 2000, down 626 vehicles or 3.2%. All segments, with the exception of the 3.5 Tonne Truck, up 190 vehicles (2.5%) & 15 Tonne Truck, up 144 (2.5%) have contributed to this downturn, with the 7.5 Tonne Truck, down 852 vehicles (-16.5%); 3.5 Tonne Bus down, 62 (-8.0%) and 7.5 Tonne Bus down, 46 (-57.5%).

The Light Truck Market, is down 983 vehicles or 4.9% versus December 2000. With the exception of the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2 segment, up 263 (5.9%) and the 2.5 Tonne Truck segment up 49 (122.5%), all other segments contributed to this decline, with the Van segment, down 384 (-25.2%); the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4 segment, down 362 (-10.1%); the ATW Large segment, down 236 (-11.7%); the ATW Compact segment down 219 (-6.2%); the ATW Medium segment, down 71 (-1.6%) and the Light Bus segment, down 23 (-15.7%). The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries advises that the full year market for 2000 has come in at 787,100 vehicles.
The December 2000 industry volume of 76,665 new vehicles is an increase of 4,869 (6.8%) on November (71,796 vehicles). With December (25.0) having 0.7 of a selling day less than November (25.7), this translates to an increase, in daily rate terms of 273.0 vehicles per day or 9.8%.
The December 2000 market returned an all time record December month and is up, 4,121 vehicles or 5.7% on December 1999 (72,544 vehicles). December 2000 had the 0.1 of a selling day more than December (24.9) 1999, resulting in an increase of 153.2 vehicles per day or 5.3%.
The Passenger Vehicle Market increased by 4,749 vehicles (9.5%) over the same month last year. Whilst the Light Truck Market, fell by 536 vehicles (-2.6%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market fell by 92 vehicles (-4.9%) over December 1999.
Toyota was market leader in December, followed by Holden and Ford. Toyota, won the race for the top spot in 2000, with a margin of 3,771 vehicle sales, or 0.5 market share points.
FULL YEAR 2000 VS FULL YEAR 1999
The full year 2000 market of 787,100 vehicles has eclipsed the 1999 full year result by 285 vehicles. With the market down by 11.1% or 44,220 as at the end of June 2000, this represents a significant recovery. In fact the second half volume of 433,609 is a record by 25,520 vehicles. The Passenger Market at 553,673 vehicles increased by 6,101 vehicles (1.1%), however the increase was not uniform amongst the segments with only half the segments performing ahead of last year. Growth was driven by the Small car segment, up 17,075 (12.5%); the People Mover segment, up 4,177 (55.3%) and the Sports car segment, up 1,456 (18.0%), and to a lesser extent, the Prestige car segment, up 690 (2.4%). Segments failing to achieve their 1999 volume levels, ranked by volume, were the Large car segment, down 9357 (-4.5%); the Medium car segment, down 4,638 (-10.2%); Light car segment, down 2,767 (-3.0%) and the Luxury car segment, down 535 (-2.7%). The Light Truck Market at 213,571 vehicles fell by 5,250 vehicles (-2.4%) on 1999 levels in full year terms. This Market had sustained high levels of growth for a number of years so the fall is coming off a high base. The All Terrain Wagon segments in total continued to grow, however although the ATW Compact segment, is up 2,424 (6.6%) and the ATW Medium segment, is up 1,305 (3.4%) the ATW Large segment failed to achieve its 1999 level by 2,274 (-8.1%). The Light bus was the only other segment to improve over 1999 up 152 (10.4%). Segments returning losses versus 1999 levels were, Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4, down 3,010 (-7.1%); the Van segment, down 2,316 (-10.9%); the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2 segment, down 1,325 (-2.7%) and the 2.5 Tonne truck, down 206 (-24.7%). The Heavy Truck Market at 19,856 vehicles, fell below the full year figure in 1999, down 566 vehicles (-5.4%). Two segments returned improved results the 3.5 Tonne Bus segment, up 222 vehicles (27.0%) and 3.5 Tonne Truck, up 140 (1.9%) whilst with the 15 Tonne Truck, down 553 (-8.6%); the 7.5 Tonne Truck, down 217 (-4.0%) and the 7.5 Tonne Bus, down 158 vehicles (-66.4%), failed to achieve their 1999 volume levels.

The Light Truck Market is down 536 vehicles (-2.6%) on December 1999. With the exception of the ATW Medium, up 515 (13.5%); the ATW Compact, up 453 (14.6%) and the ATW Large, up 115 (4.8%) all other segments were in decline, with falls returned by the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4, down 677 (-15.9%); the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2, down 514 (-10.4%); the Van segment, down 368(-19.5%); the Light Bus segment, down 39 (-22.3%) and the 2.5 Tonne Truck segment, down 21 (-34.4%), versus their 1999 result. All segments have experienced growth, with the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2, up 10,909 (18.2%); the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4 segment, up 6,692 vehicles (15.2%); the Van segment, up 3,328 vehicles (18.2%); the 2.5 Tonne Truck segment, up 615 vehicles (64.5%) and the Light bus segment, up 172 vehicles (10.7%). The Heavy Truck Market at 24,133 vehicles finished the year ahead of the 2002 full year market, by 3,001 vehicles or 14.2%. Whilst the Bus segments are down, with the 3.5 Tonne Bus, down 23 (-3.8%) and the 7.5 Tonne Bus down 3 (-33.3%), the Truck segments are performing well, with the 15 Tonne Truck, up 2,164 vehicles (26.8%); the 7.5 Tonne Truck, up 472 vehicles (10.8%) and the 3.5 Tonne Truck, up 391 (4.8%).
MONTHLY RESULTS
The Passenger Vehicle Market is up 4,517 vehicles or 10.0%. Significant growth is being shown in the Small car segment, up 2,824(22.5%); the Prestige car segment, up 1,226 (63.5%); the Medium car segment, up 768(21.0%); the Light car segment, up 763 (13.7%)& the Large car segment, up 202 (1.2%), whilst the Sports car segment, down 231 (-25.4%); the People mover segment, down 513 (-35.4%)&the Luxury car segment, down 522(-17.3%) all fell well below the volume achieved in the corresponding month in 2002. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market is up 2,445 vehicles or 22.5% versus December 2002. All segments are experiencing growth, with the SUV Medium segment, up 1,707 (77.5%); SUV Luxury segment, up 495 (71.1%); SUV Compact segment, up 142 (2.4%) and the SUV Large segment, up 101(5.2%). The Light Truck Market is up by 2,416 vehicles or 24.3% on December 2002. All segments are experiencing growth, with the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2 segment, up 1,407 vehicles (30.0%); Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4, up 789 (22.4%); the Van segment, up 182(11.9%); the Light bus segment up 21 (18.8%) & the 2.5 Tonne Truck segment, up 17 vehicles (17.7%). The Heavy Truck Market is up 435 vehicles or 23.3%, when compared with the same month in 2002.
TOP TEN MAKES
Toyota achieved the top sales position in the December monthly market with 16,577 vehicles, ahead of Holden with 14,172 and Ford third with 10,662. Toyota, with a market share of 20.5%, gained the market leadership crown for 2003. Holden’s December result sees it in second position with a market share of 19.3%, with Ford's market share of 13.9% placing it third. Mitsubishi, with sales 6,029 and with a market share of 8.0%, hold fourth position. Nissan sold 5,109 vehicles in December and with a share of 6.4%, are in fifth place ahead of Mazda, on 5.8% market share.

VFACTS INDUSTRY SUMMARY- MARCH 2005
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries issues the following summary for the retail sales performance of the automotive industry for March 2005, based on the industry's standard retail report, VFACTS.
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries advises that the forecast for 2005 is 980,000 vehicles.
The March 2005 industry volume of 86,426, sets a new record for a March month, the previous record of 86,046 was set last year, and is up, 380 vehicles or 0.4% on March 2004. March 2005 (24.6) had 2.3 less selling days than March (26.9) 2004, resulting in an increase of 314.5 vehicles per day or 9.8%.
The March 2005 market is up 5,417 (6.7%) on February (81,009 vehicles). March (24.6) had 0.6 of a selling day more than February (24.0), resulting in an increase of 137.9 vehicles per day or 4.1%.
The Passenger Vehicle Market fell by 448 vehicles (-0.8%) versus the same month last year, whilst the Sports Utility Vehicle Market, increased by 2,343 (15.6%), the Light Truck Market, fell by 1,852 vehicles (-12.4%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market increased by 337 vehicles (14.5%) over March 2004.
Holden was market leader in March, followed by Toyota and Ford. Year to Date Toyota lead Holden with a margin of 896 vehicle sales, or 0.4 market share points.
The year-to-date 2005 market of 237,000 vehicles is running ahead of the same period in 2004 by 4.5% or 10,280 vehicles. With 3.3 selling days less in 2005, the daily selling rate increased by 277.4 vehicles per day or 9.3%. The Passenger Market at 147,000 vehicles is up by 4,681 vehicles (3.3%). In spite of the strong market, mixed results by segment show that, whilst increases were returned by, the Small car segment up, 5,693 (12.9%); the Medium car segment up, 1,429 (12.2%); the Light car segment up, 1,223 (6.0%); the People mover segment up, 817 (28.0%); the Prestige car segment up, 739 (8.2%) and the Sports car segment up, 378 (18.9%), the Large car segment down, 4,522 (-10.3%) and the Luxury car segment down, 1,076 (-12.7%), failed to improve on their volumes same period last year. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market at 46,652 vehicles is now running 6,491 vehicles (16.2%) ahead, in year-to-date terms. The SUV Medium segment is up, 5,641 (47...5) and the SUV Compact segment is up, 1,931 (10.4%), again not all segments achieved growth with the SUV Luxury segment down, 603 (-16.1%) and the SUV Large segment down, 478 (-8.1%). The Light Truck Market at 36,804 vehicles is running 1,621 vehicles (-4.2%) behind, in year-to-date terms. The only segment, to experience growth, is the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4 segment up, 23 (0.2%), whilst the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2 segment down 672 vehicles (-3.6%); the Van segment down, 659 vehicles (-11.6%); the Light bus down, 175 vehicles (-44.5%) and the 2.5 Tonne truck segment down, 138 vehicles (-31.7%) failed to achieve their 2004 volumes. The Heavy Truck Market at 6,544 vehicles is ahead of the same period in 2004 up, 729 vehicles or 12.5%.
MONTHLY RESULTS
The Passenger Vehicle Market is down 448 vehicles or (-0.8%). Mixed results were returned by segment, with the Small car segment up, 1,690 (1.4%); the People Mover segment up, 103 (8.8%); Light car segment up, 54 (0.7%) and the Sports car segment up, 13 (1.6%), whilst the Large car segment down, 1,788 (-10.5%); the Luxury car segment down, 367 (-12.0%); the Prestige car segment down, 126 (-3.7%) and the Medium car segment down 27 (-0.6%), failed to improve on the same month in 2004. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market is up 2,613 vehicles or 15.6% versus March 2004. Whilst the SUV Medium segment up, 2,081 (45.3%) and the SUV Compact segment up, 748 (10.9%), returned significant increases, the SUV Luxury segment down, 243 (-18.3%) and the SUV Large segment down, 243 (10.9%), failed to improve on the same month in 2004. The Light Truck Market is down by 1,621 vehicles on March 2004. All segments were down, with the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2, down 930 (-12.7%) the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X4 segment down, 400 (-7.8%); the Van segment down, 369 (-16.8%); Light bus segment down, 103 vehicles (-66.5%) and the 2.5 Tonne Truck segment down, 50 (-32.1%. The Heavy Truck Market is up 337 vehicles or 14.5%, when compared with the same month in 2004.
TOP TEN MAKES
Holden gained the top sales position in the March monthly market with 16,032 vehicles, ahead of Toyota with 15,668 and Ford third with 12,019. Toyota, with a market share of 18.7%, retains market leadership in year-to-date terms. Holden�?�¢?? s March result sees them in second position with a market share of 18.3%, with Ford's market share of 13.6% placing them third. Mazda, with sales 5,794 and with a market share of 7.4%, hold fourth position. Mitsubishi sold 6,730 vehicles in March and with a share of 6.9%, are in fifth place ahead of Nissan, on 6.0% market share.
