Hi all,
Question to those who are using Comp Cam 220/224 112. What's your fuel economy like? I use to average 14.5 to 15 litres/100kms. After this baby cam, I am getting 20 litres/100kms. I can understand that might mean, I am having too much fun on the road BUT my clutch is stuffed and slipping so I have been taking it real easy for the past week and the result was 20 litres/100kms. Most post suggests, with this cam, my economy should not change too much from stock.
I would appreciate any figures (before cam / after cam). Also, your LS1Edit tuner name/phone would also be appreciated. I might have to switch my tuner if he can't fix it - all depends on what others are getting.

216 220 LSA 114 comp cam with 1.8YT
cruising at 85kph 10.0L over 15km trip
cruising at 110 about 12.0 over a distance - without any WOT
around town and freeway with alot of WOT abt 18L/100km
I am also interested when idling in drive at the traffic lights what people see in L/hr mine is about 4.0-4.2L/hr it used to be before cam 3.0L-3.3L/hr
I just put on a ported polished throttle body and gained back about 1L/100km
All of this is with standard stall converter and 3.73 diff.

If you're doing a lot of stop/start, idling at lights, then the increase isn't so bad. You're never going to get stock economy with a cam unless it's a real baby.
A lot of people get close to 20 around town in Sydney in peak hour stock, so depending on where you drive, how, how much idling and stop start, etc, 20 with that cam ain't so bad.
Don't blame your tuner, it's the nature of the beast.
I was getting around 18l/100km in stop/start traffic when I had that cam (also auto with hi-stall).

My 220 112lsa cam just returned 14.5l/100km in traffic.
On highway 10l/100km and better (standard SS diff ratio)
They get thirsty with plenty of WOT and idling in stop start traffic.
Maybe your O2 sensors aren't working too well?

I had the same cam, and same experience with the significant fuel consumption increase. Its really bad in stop/start traffic isn it? I dont think your tuner is the issue, i think it is "normal".

Very good quote forrested
in traffic it cant be helped,it will use fuel and at wot it will also use alot of fuel, bit of hard and normal driving will normally return fair economy

i have the exact same cam and get about the same around town 15-18l/100k's and 11-12 on the highways. Thats with a 3500rpm stally.
In very heavy stop start ive seen 18-23L/100 :(

what do people get on their L/100km instant reading when idling in traffic in drive - stopped.
I see 4.0-4.1 L/hr

I asked a few people this on Mirc the other night, comparing differant cams. Can't remember all of them though. This was at idle in park or neutral at operating temp.

No worries. Good to know. Thanks! But my tuner did tell me economy will hardly change! With the price hitting what it is, 25% shift in economy is, well...

SQP H&C 224 (cam with similar specs) tuned by Delco, gets 16-17L/100km and (WOT often) city and 10.5/11 country(110km/h cruising). Thats not off trip computer either thats the actual fuel used from the pump. I'm sure I would see 20's if I did 5min trips in city traffic.
BTW the wifes new Terri gets 14's around town so Im quite happy with the 224 cam figures.

Truth is at cruise it will hardly change .....mine is better than standard while cruising and cam made no difference cruising........but the moment you put your foot down there has to be more fuel used to make more hp. Also idling when stopped or in slow traffic the engine is using more fuel the faster idle being the main contributor (as well as overlap???).

All fun and games isn't it? Power vs. economy! Who would have thought small cam would stuff up the fuel economy that much at idle? Good performance (in my book) makes up for that I guess. :D

I have the the same set up and on an economy run sitting on 95 k just a couple of ks at 105 over 400k Good roads slightly undulating,14.2 ....then yesterday 35k @ 115+ kph (110 stretch Caboolture-Gympie) with otrcai 15.4/100 also pre otr one sec slower than your pb pre otrcai . I think there is just something wrong with these tonners, and please dont someone tell me about the weight difference, I am thinking its something to do with the tonners "anti flog" ,they dont have TC and I dont think this is addressed fully within the tuners software as who tunes Tonners for the 1/4 anyway.

Not sure what you meant by this "also pre otr one sec slower than your pb pre otrcai"
Tonners are lighter so should be faster, regardless of the original torque management tuners can flash in the same settings totally to any other car.
Fuel economy is effected by torque at the rev we are cruising at. ie how easy it is to go that fast.
Extractors, cat back, 25% underdrive pulley, ported polished TB , roller rockers - are all things that seem to have helped economy in my car.
But the tune at WOT and tune at idle - also effect economy. Cruising i believe they all trim themselves lean to the same optimal figure.

Since putting a polished and ported TB on my Car economy is better. Also idling better.
Today on a 110 freeway at just a little above the limit the whole time averaged 10.9L/100km. This is the best i have got since i changed to this gearing and went mafless. With 3.07 gears would probably be close to 9.0L/100km
All out with two 10min stints on the freeway - some hills - some lights - some WOT average 14.1L/100km today.
I reckon the car has improved over 1.0L/100km from just the 'Rebel SS' enhanced TB.

I dont know if i can help as my driving would be alot different to you all :p
Most of my driving is hiway, about 80%.
My fuel economy has not changed on the long run, i still get 10 litres to 100 kms if i was going interstate which i do a few times a year.
My around town type driving is worst, i think only because it feels/ or used to feel great
But to give you some sort of an idea, my fuel statement still shows mid to high 12 litres to 100 since i first got the car
If i were to drive this into heavy city traffic, the story would be alot different.
My car has
220/224 cam.....(girls blouse size)
Heads cleaned up by Nathen when he fitted the Comp springs
Sam maffless tune
Exhaust...twin 2 1/2
The rest of the car is standed, M6, 3.46
I can and do drive the car at 100kmph in 6th gear on the hiway, even this weekend towing a small trailor back from interstate
As others have said, most of the problems with "cams" is in the TUNE.
The sort of driving i do, i would not go smaller, but i would not go too much bigger either, i didnt do this to BRAG about personal best every time they go to the track, or win dyno comps, just wanted to feel a bit more power when required
Hope this helps
Jim :)

Two things often accepted as true.
More power requires more fuel.
And increasing overlap on the camshaft
to get rid more of the burnt gases
will also discharge a certain amount of clean air and fuel
This is most noticeable at idle.
