View Full Version : Why are second hand SS utes so expensive?

OK, what is going on? Why do people buy a two year ols SS ute for $36k when they could get a new one for $40k?
This situation is getting out of hand...I mean...a VX SS sedan is now cheaper than a VX SS ute.
Is there any logical explanation?

I don't get it either.
Two possibilities - there's a long waiting list for SS utes, or people who buy second hand ones assume they can't afford a new one but don't actually bother to check the price.

i think it is a bit of both. plus perhaps some are young guys who cannot stretch a few more $k to the sedan (ie. sought after).

SS utes have better resale value.

Utes have generally always had better resale than sedans, look at a VS ute compared to VS sedan, and what about how long HQ-HZ utes held they're value, they seem to have finally died a rusty death now.

The reality is that people DON'T buy them second hand for that price, they just get advertised for that because of demand. Some private owners seem to TRY and sell them for almost as much as they paid for them for some reason (most likely the same type that think bolt-ons actually ADD value at sale time  ).
One well known (former) QLD member found that even though he advertised his nicely modded and very grunty ute for a bargain price right off the bat, he simply got no bites, and ended up letting it go for a song

Also remember that $40k might get you a new ute.. then dependin on how good a deal you got you might need to add some $$ for:
rego
dealer delivery
Paint/leather/upholstery protection
Tow bar
Rust proofing
Ute liner
Hard top
Extra $$ if you want a better stereo
etc etc
So sometimes it is not as clear cut asit seems. just a few of these "options" can push your $40k well out.
I have always found it better to buy used than new... i just don't see the point in dumping 10% for driving round the block.
And yes i am aware there are good deals around - so no need to post the "my mate got this deal.." :D

The extras you list dont cost as much as you may think...just ask someone who has purchased a few new cars in their time.

At the end of the day the facts are these:
1. A sedan buyer gets his SS for $55k and advertises it for $38k the next year.
2. A ute buyer gets his SS for $45k and advertises it for $38k the next year.
You do the maths. Its a joke. I would just not bother buying a second hand SS ute.
BTW I own a sedan.

XLR8 V8 is quite correct, what people ask is not what they get ..Pagey knows this better than than most after his recent exploits :) ,Price will also change depedant on locality, for reference ,I was the under bidder this morning on one 03 VY SS ute in Redhot ( auto ) done under 30K....bidding started at 26K..drive-out cost would include $100 buyers premium, plus 2% transfer duty....nice tidy vehicle with plenty of reg / no mods visable under the bonnet, but fitted with aftermarket alloy's.

The big elephant on Logan Rd (04 plate VZ's) is one such establishment doing under $40K drive-away deals

Remember holden a heap more sedans than utes , so potentially there is a heap more demand proportionaly for a ute... hence they hold there price a bit better in my opinion than a sedan...

SSBarney mentioned HQ-HZ utes.
Using them as an example, it looks like a second hand VY SS ute will still be advertised for $30k in 20 years time. Sounds like a top investment.

The utes are the highest retaining value within the Holden ranks. Just check out the Open Road magazine from NRMA near the rear. It shows a rating of 71 points if my memory serves me correctly. :D

Yes, you must admit, they are a fine looking piece
of kit with the right aftermarket wheels and some
heavy lowering.

Bought my VY SS Ute for $42,000, traded it in for $30,000 and it was on the lot for $36,000
Had the VY for nearly two years.... and it had bald tyres which were replaced and a small dent in the tailgate which was fixed by the Holden Dealer
I was very happy :)

i just sold my VY SS Ute for $34k, 18 months old. I spent a fair bit on mods though, funny thing is the guy just didnt care about any mods, he would have paid the same for a stock car.
I think they are relatively sought after because, after all, it is the cheapest entry price into a newish SS.

If you're talking about dealer prices this may be because they include GST in the price where private sale doesn't. Take the GST off and you should be closer to private sale prices

its quite simple, holden make a lot less utes than sedans in SS form. supply and demand. additionally, most sedan SS buyers are fleet/govt/etc and get hefty discounts on them, and subsequently resale is reduced.
another point to consider is that a lot of tradies etc are happy to get a 3 year old SS ute for 30k, than pay 45K for a new one as long as the back hasnt seen much use.
however, some counterpoints. lately, the massive discounts being given by holden on brand new VZ's, as well as the fact that there seem to be a lot more Utes now compared to three years ago, is likely to impact on this resale.
rebook lists 3 year resale as 60% for sedan, 70% for ute. thats life mate, as long as someone is willing to pay the price, the price will stand.

It's this sort of thing that has me thinking lately the VXII SS sedan is the Holden performance bargain of the moment.
Still reasonably new (3 years isn’t old), most of them have fairly low kays (60-70k), still looks good (arguably better than VY-VZ), not that far behind the current model (other than being down 25kW on power and having the older dash design, what else really was there?) doesn’t cost as much as a similar-age SS Ute anymore (there’s that weird resale again), and widely available for $25-30k.
That’s a little over half the price of a new one, for a car that is only slightly behind the latest model, and which with $5k or so of mods would blow a new SS away.
If only I could get my other half to follow my thinking on this one, I’d be set :P

90% of utes would be bought by GST registered owners so they would need to include GST in the second hand sale price...actually, that does explain the higher prices to some extent.

90% of utes would be bought by GST registered owners so they would need to include GST in the second hand sale price...actually, that does explain the higher prices to some extent.
When a GST registered business buys a ute, or car, they are not able to claim the GST portion if that vehicle was bought privately unless the seller was also registered. If we sell a vehicle privately, which we recently did, we still have to forward one eleventh of the price received to the ATO. If a private owner sells his vehicle for the same market price no GST is payable because he was not able to claim it when the vehicle was originaly purchased. When a vehicle is traded, for say $30000, the dealer adds his margin which includes a percentage of GST on that increased asking price. $30000 + $4400 ($400 GST) = $34400
If we then buy this vehicle from the dealer for use within our business we are then able to claim back the GST on the total price paid ie.$3127. For this reason we only buy our business vehicles from GST registered owners.
We, as a business, cannot ask any more for our vehicles than the going market price. If we did no one would buy them :bash:

Remember utes are useful cars, especially if they are the performance model. They can carry a load and go fast, the look better than the sedans when modified, and every girl knows they want to be in yours!
Doesn't matter what brand you dive, everything from HiLux to SS's they all hold there value very well, especially the Fords, cause the leafs make for a very large carrying capacity and they have a bigger tray  and they go fast too LOL!
4wd's are the same, they are useful vehicles and are often indemand.

I bought my Black VY SS II M6 Ute with leather and climate, plus tub liner, tints and lowered springs, plus SS mats May 6th 2004 for $39990 drive away.
At the time 2nd hand VY II's were being sold between $39000 and $42000 asking price.
A mate of mine bought the exact same car a month later for almost $47,000 drive away.
What's the difference?
I'm patient and I know how to negotiate. I was looking with intent to buy for almost 6 months for the car I wanted at the price I was prepared to pay.
Cars are like houses, asking price is one thing- final price is whatever you can negotiate.
Never pay full price.
