i have an old VN commodore that i have owned for 5 years and the injectors need to be cleaned i have tryed "spitfire" that gets poored into the tank the car seems to run fine untill that fuel is used than its back to normal it has got to the point where i need to keep my foot slightly on the throttle to keep the car from stalling when stopping at lights etc... if someone could help me out on cleaning the injectors that would be fantastic and much appreciated i dont fancy paying a few hundred dollars if there is a simple way to clean them

You sure its the injectors and not a whole heap of crud built up in the throttle body ?

Try to get your hands on a bottle of " FUEL DOCTOR " it seems to do a better job than spitfire !! But if your problems are that bad , id either take it to holden to see if they can find anyother problem with it , or pay the bucks n have them injectors cleaned properly !!!

Spend the money and get it done right.
You will only be wating more fuel anyway if its running out of tune.
They need to be cleaned individually.
I would take Sonny up on the offer.

I use FuelDoctors in my car, and have had great results. The trick is to use half the bottle in one go the first time, and take for a long, hard drive. Then use the regular dose every 2 or 3 tanks to keep it clean. It costs about 18 bucks for a bottle, but you get 20 doses in a bottle. Well worth the investment, I think. If that doesn't work, you KNOW you need to go to a mechanic.

sonny, where abouts are you? ive been quoted $160, $90 to clean the injectors and $70 for labour but i just thought i might have been using spitfire wrong? would it work better if i mix it in a 20L fuel can first?
where do i get fueldoctor?
seedyrom, ive had the throttle body off to pull out the thermostat it looked clean with no deposits

Check plugs, leads and coil packs first (assuming it's a V6).
Also check injector leads are clipped in place properly and the contacts aren't corroded.
Check/replace the fuel filter and make sure the vaccuum lead to the fuel pressure regulator is intact and functioning.

If you're sure it's the injectors, you should run quality injector cleaner for several tanks (say 3-4) at full strength. Tip the stuff into your nearly empty tank and then fill up with some good petrol, premium fuel for example - that will mix it in fine.

Holden sell stuff called "Top engine cleaner" for fuel system cleaning - seems to be good, follow the directions. Worked well on my LPG 5.0 to keep the seldom used petrol system clean.
I also use stuff from Repco called Recotech Extra Strength Fuel injector cleaner - made by Recochem in Qld. It's about $15 a bottle - treats 2 tanks. This also did a good job with another car that had had too much cheap Woolies fuel through it. :bash:

what are your thoughts on these fuel additives sonny.a freind owns a moblie fuel injection service(off car clean)and says that the fuel injection cleaner (fuel additive)just makes the problem worse.he says it picks up crap from the tank, pump and lines fine but this grime can't get past the small hole in the injectors.so clogs the injectors eventually.REGARDS PAUL.

croydon is abit far im out near australia's wonderland im not a mechanic but am very mechanical minded doing abit of car work including a head gasket, stearing racks, brakes, gear box, basic tune ups etc... so i have a pretty good idea that it is the injectors but it could also be other problems aswell
the car starts fine but when placed into D,R,1,2,OD the car stalls half the time without throttle what else could this be? dont say gear box
also when the car is going at any speed when i put my foot down something chokes the car??? maybe i should have said this in the first post
all the replys are much appreciated

hi there

some fuel injector cleaner addidtives are really potent so you have to becareful as in a concetrated mix it can eat ur lines away and even injector tips and cause injectors to leak,we use a workshop formula which is not sold to public for that very reason, hope this helps
