Can anyone help me with any info about the transmission in the VT s2 SS, since I had to remove the battery the trans is slipping on all its changes.
Holden had to reprogram twice while the car was under warranty, for a similair problem.
What can be done to improve the shifts ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Exactly the same thing happened with me (VT2 SS auto). Gearbox was slipping badly changing from 1st to 2nd under load. It was also really clunky with the change from 2nd to 1st when slowing down. I had Holden flash the latest settings into the ECU ($50) and I got the transmission serviced by a
reputable mechanic ($85). When I got the car back, the clunk was gone but it still slipped but not nearly as bad. A few days later, it stopped slipping and it has been 100% solid as a rock for the past 6 months.

Is the car log book serviced? If so, the transmission isn't scheduled for a service until 100,000km+.

100,000km seems a long time not to service a transmission! I checked the tranny dipstick today in mine with 67,000km on the clock and its still a nice, clean red colour. I also assume mine has never been serviced, just top-ups have been made. What is the lifespan of the 4L65-E tranny in an unmodified Gen III, with mostly normal driving but the occasional 'burst'? I have to consider when to sell the car and upgrade before i start getting mechanical problems associated with the mileage!

Only the HSV's got the 4L65-E. The rest have the 4L60-E. In an unmodified car you should get 250-300'000k's before it requires a rebuild. The 3-4 clutchpacks are very weak but a rebuild back to stock spec is around $1200-1700 depending on the workshop. On a car with edit, going to the drags, driven hard etc i'd recommend a rebuild every 100'000k's (or as required)

I am about to replace mine in the caprice next week with a unit built to handle 350rwkw so hopefully it will last longer.

Oh, it thought the Series 2 WH Caprice came with the 4l65-e? Better check my manual!

thanks for the feedback, it has 140k's up now and the trans has been serviced twice due to similair issues.
I will get it checked at holden and see what the cost is to get it edited, I think there is a place in Frankston who can do it.

thanks
