Hi all,
As the topic suggests. On Sunday night late, three empty lanes to choose from, dead straight and level and no traffic to speak of, I get stuck sitting at a red light. (I was sitting idly and driving mellow in no hurry etc and NO I don't condone street racing BTW!!) When a VYII SS ute M6 rolls up beside me, looks around checks my car notices the GENIII badge on the guard and gives me the 'lets have a go buddy!!!" squirt on the throttle. Lets face it with the scene set who could resist a quick blat!!

Anyway I thought I would get hammered. I have a VXII Berlina wagon so for a start I'm about 100kg heavier, have ONLY 225kw (supposedly) opposed to his 245kw, his was an M6 and mine is obviously an A4 being a Berlina so more drivetrain loss, and lastly M6's run a 3.46 diff to my A4's 3.08 right. My cars only mods(that I know of!!) are MCAI with 2 hole mod and a catback HSV 2 1/4?? dual system with opened cat pipes and no rear resonator.
BTW his car was not running it's standard exhaust.

Anyway I got the jump being an A4 it was just point the wheel and floor the loud pedal and it bogs down and just launches. He got off fairly cleanly as well traction wise and he absolutely caned it then bang in to second with a HUGE chirp bang into third another huge chirp.

Now to my original question- "How can this be??, because he had NO hope in hell of EVER passing me not even close. I pulled out 3/4 of a carlength on him and about the closest he EVER got to me the whole time was inline with my 1/4 panel/ rear door shut line. This is the secong time it has beaten more fancied opposition in the last fortnight (it mauled an HSV R8 off the mark) which I thought was a fluke, but obviously not.

Can anyone please explain???? Why my car is a FREAK! I don't think he could believe it either, infact rather stunned because he was playing for real, he flogged the rectum out of this ute (so did I to my beast for that matter)
I wonder as it was an ex Holden engineering/evaluation vehicle do they build themselves 'specials' with extra herbs coz there is NO WAY this thing has ONLY 225kw!!

Cheers Kane

The 225/235/245kw thing can be taken with a grain of salt. Stick them all on a dyno (same day same dyno) and you'll get wildly varying figures.

My mate's VY1 SS M6 (235kw @ fly) could never beat my VX1 Calais (225kw @ fly) to 120ish when they were both stock. We dyno'd on the same dyno and were within 1rwhp of each other. We then did similar mods (tune, exhaust, MCAI, diff gears) and were within 0.3rwkw of each other, and 0.1sec down the 1/4. Very close (he had the better power figure, I had the better time). :)

So yeah, don't put too much faith in the factory figures.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Don't question it. Enjoy it.

Also depends on how the car was run in and treated since. Also, some engines are just sweeter than others. I believe mine is a sweet one, it goes hard partly, I think, because I did some research on running in.

he missed no gears so either the other car was really a v6 or his clutch was slipping.

auto a consistant where m6 have probs with clutch and changes.

who knows unless he's on here and you can ask what happen, if its the truth. whoever maybe won't admit they got beaten.

Take it down the 1/4 and see how it measures up.

Being a ute, he may have the tub loaded up with tools etc,
I know mine would probably struggle against a stock early ls1 with mine setup every day with toolboxes!

V8's have a very distinctive sound and this ute sounded and looked sweeet, and no he didn't miss a gear either plus I don't think a slipping clutch would pull such massive chirps on the upchange!! Like both wheels breaking traction and the car kicking out its tail!! It had no tonneau cover and the tray was empty too BTW!!

Just to add insult to injury my car is fitted with the largest tow pack available from Holden 2100kg(a fairly hefty item apparently) plus a third row seat which is not exactly light and two baby seats (I was alone BTW) and not forgeting my fat 110kg arse. Which begs my question of how is this so!!

And yes I would love to run down the strip that I do agree it is the ultimate way to sort the truth from a sea of BS, but since we/I all work in the family business doing 70+ hrs a week time is at a premium

Yes this is the best and most enjoyable (and safest ) measuring tool of them all...forget the dyno :D
