Hello all, I was wondering if anyone can help me with using the best fuel for the GENIII's.(In South OZ. as Im not sure if Octanes differ from state to state). I thought any premium fuel was good for them, but after the weekend's cruise I have changed my mind lol. On saturday night I put Shell premium fuel in my car and it ended up pinging badly (as I have had maf EDIT done). I havent noticed the pinging before, as I use all types of Premium fuel , BP, Shell, Mobil and Caltex.
I also noticed a slight drop in power too with this fuel, but I didnt really take any notice until it started pinging badly :(
So if anyone could help me with this It would be much appreciatted, thanks.
The Mods I have done to the car is:
Exhaust and Headers (No res)
Engine Covers
K&N filter
Larger MAF Pipe
MAF LS1 edit
The car has been dynoed at 227RWKW, so thats how much it is producing.
I was also wondering if it is advisable to use Octane Booster sometimes? Or does it damage your CATS? (Or should I just open the cats up? Or gut them?)
Thanks Once again for any input or Knowledge, Cheers
Steven

You might be getting the premium (pulp) fuels and the
98 fuels mixed up. Bp ultimate, Mobil synergy 8000
and Shell optimax (to a degree) are all 98 RON, and
I believe Caltex also have a 98 fuel now. You PULPS
are only 95 RON. I personally only use BP Ultimate,
but have no choice in this, as it's all we get up here
in Buthole Idahoe.
Oh, and don't gut your cats, it aint worth the grief.

I have the same mods as your car and all i use is BP Ultimate. I have tried Mobile 8000, but didnt get the same amount of k's out of a tank compared to the BP. I havent seen Shell optimax in SA so i havent tried it, but i'll stick will what i have been useing since i had the car tuned.

Shell Optimax is not available in SA and never has been. It is only 95 RON so avoid it if possible. All other brands are listed at 98 RON :D

Ive always used Ultimate 98 except for the odd experiment. I'd normally say use nothing else but I have to confess I have the crappiest tank of Ultimate I've EVER had in the car right now. The thing is very prone to pinging its head off.
I'll try another servo next time...

Ive only ever used BP Ultimate (98 RON). Yes its dearer than normal premium unleaded but its better to be safe than sorry :)

My apologies, perhaps I should have worded my response more carefully. I was not suggesting optimax was not 98 RON, i was saying the SA shell premium unleaded (not optimax) is 95 RON. I personally use caltex vortex fuel and have never had any issues with it, but hey, each to their own :D

Yeah, I was using Vortex prior to my Edit and never
had any issues with it.

I have had a bad tank every now and then with ultimate, but it seems to be from the same servo. I fill up there all the time, it only happens once in a blue moon.

:D I have used BP Ultimate and Caltex mainly. I have turned away from BP mainly due to the fact I had my car dynoed on a dyno day last year where it registered 218.2 rwkw. This was using Ultimate and the top end of the curve suggested pinging as the curve was very rough up high. Martin Donnon was present on the day and I asked him what would cause such a rough curve and he said pinging. Since then I have not used Ultimate, although I never could notice any pinging whilst driving. My car has not been edited yet either which no doubt contributed to the pinging. But I get the Caltex cheaper because of the Woolworths vouchers :D

218 from an un-editted VT? That was a very friendly
dyno wasn't it.

Yes one would think so thats for sure. Quite the opposite it would seem though, as there was nearly legal action over the dyno readings on the day from others who have edited gen 3's. The highest result on the day was 223 rwkw and that was from 2 other cars Marty has edited and 2 cars achieved that reading one was maf edited and the other mafless. The same 2 cars had achieved 240 rwkw (maf tuned car) on another dyno, and believe it or not, the mafless tuned car achieved 250 rwkw on the same dyno around 6 months earlier! So go figure  I do have suspicions about my computer not being stock, however the rev limiter remains at 5,800 and I have performed a fair few mods on it since I bought it so if it did have an edit earlier, it certainly needs another one.

Why is the rev limiter at 5800, it should be at 6200
I believe.

Solid: Hmm if you havent had an edit done, wouldnt that mean your knock sensors still work? and you wouldnt get pinging? Im not sure about this, this is just what I have been told from a mechanic. That when you get an edit done they dont work so you get pinging. *shrug* Im just a gen3 noob :)
More input please lol
Thanks for all the input so far though :D

My rev limiter is at 5800 which is the factory setting, when cars are edited, generally speaking, the tuner will up the rev limiter setting to 6200. So the fact mine still remains at 5800 leads me to believe no edit is present.

Sorry to change the thread somewhat here :D The knock sensor being active still or not is tuner dependent. I know in the earlier edits, many tuners did disable the knock sensors but not all of them did thats for sure. These days I believe it is very uncommon for a tuner to disable the knock sensor.

Couldnt figure out how to edit a thread lol. I believe the factory limiter is 5,800 but is it 6,200? I have seen on my tacho 5800 and going up against mates with edits, they always pull slightly more in gears than I do before hitting limiter. Can someone shed some light on this?
Stock fuel cut out is 6200rpm. You can change this when getting tuned, some run 6500, and ive even seen others up it to 7000  , 6500 is plenty for me.

As I said it is 6200. You might want to start using the
seach function, you will find a lot of useful info mate :)

PS if anyones interesting the dodgy tank (assuming she picks up again when I throw in the next one after draining it) came from BP Gawler which is where I normally fuel up. Not the first dodgy tank I've had from BP's but their hit rate has been pretty darn good (but why should I EVER get one I ask!)....
PPS On the way to work this morning tons of fun, had a BA 6 cylinder ute up my klacka impressing himself with his accelerator work and couldnt do squat about it as couldnt rev the sucker.....gotta love that.

I dunno about a friendly dyno but my car, VX SS Manual Series 2 pulled 216 kw @ wheels with Martin Donnan at the wheel in shootout mode! What have i done i hear you ask? Biggest Mutha hole in front of air box i could cut and a twin 2.5" cats back exhaust system with no mufflers (just 2 off 4" round resonators) with X-Pipe and nothing else! Why do people put mufflers on GENIII's anyway?? All the muffler equiped LS1's i have heard aren't anywhere near as deep as mine...
Geeze people...when are you going to learn to look at the date of the thread before replying!!! This thread hasnt been touched since April 2005!!!!! :errr:
