My SV8 has a shudder in the PS when turning at low speed (eg. parking bay) when the car is hot. I was told there was a fix for this in the V6 mods, but all dealers I've spoke to say there is no fix for the V8s. Anyone heard/seen this fix (I'm assuming some sought of revised piping or something?)

Thanks,
Rod.

When I drove a BA Falcon this was a very common problem, it was due to cavitation in the system. The Ford "fix" was to drive you car at low speed whilst doing several figure eights, this sometimes fixed the problem.

I have the exact same problem with my WL Caprice. I complained about it when I took delivery of the car in December and at my last visit to the dealership to have some warranty issues looked at they finally acknowledged the issue after 5 months of complaints. They gave me the same answer regarding no Fix on the V8 however they have agreed to see if they can use the V6 "fix" next time the car is in which will be next week sometime and I will keep you posted.

Hope this helps

Nick

There is a fix for the LS1's now, they should know.

theres no fix in the v6 or the v8, one of the problems is at the back of the p/steer pump they run a plate which has spring pressure aplied to from inside the pump, the seals in the back of the pump go hard due to heat from the engine, which suck little bits of air into the p/steer system. the p/steer problems have been there since the vn v6 all the early v8 dont have a problem, cause there mounted away from the engine eg the 5.0 litre. another problem is in calais/statesman light p/steering, they break the plastic bottom of the pressure switch in the rack, a partially block the worm valveing, and the other problem is the releif valve spring is weak in the pump. these are all common problems with that type of pump. not all gen 3 and v6 have this problem, so it cant be p/steer pipes. the common ford shuddering you get is from the lsd centre slipping, has been a problem since the ef falcons. if your holden dealership wont help u go to a approved Australian Power Steering warrenty workshop they will have all the diagnostic equipment to measure pressures and flow. if u were in sa id help u out.

don't the later cars have a different manufacturer and design pump vy2 vz?

I changed the stearing rack twice and pump twice to no avail. The only thing that seems to help was when I bought a cooler and run full synthetic fluid.

When I bought my clubby they told me it was an easy fix all they do is replace the O ring seal or something to that description. Dont know if they have a revised one for the older model cars but I think they had a crack at fixing it on the VY/VZ's however I'm not sure if it worked or not.

On the subject of power steering pumps I was wondering how much punishment can they take, I know they blow out on the track but what about during some overly spirited driving through a nice piece of mountain road, would those conditions be harsh enough to make the power steering go bang?

theyre the same as transmissions, if your fluid is in poor condition, lack of maintance, dont expect them to last for ever, we always change our oil every 5,000kms etc, as per books etc, and who changes there diff oil, and who gets there power steer flushed often, know be honest holdens dont even mention it in there service schedules, not bad considering that the oil in transmission and power steer are under more pressure and higher oil temperatures than a engine.
