Just picked up a new VZ ss (6M) ute on friday, one of the reasons for swapping from the previous VY was the lower final gearing 3.77 down from 3.45????

Ive noticed that the new VZ SS 6 speed ute does 1400RPM at 100kph compared to the VY which did 1500RPM at 100kph, this suggests that the gearing is actually slightly higher (numerically lower) in the VZ.

Does anyone know if the lower final drive gearing was an improvement to the ss sedans that skipped the utes??? or have i likely got a dud tacho or speedo (or both)??

The owners manual doesnt mention final gearing.

Also the new VZ is noticeably (much) slower than the old VY which was well run in and edited (but otherwise dead stock) , has anyone else noticed big improvements after run in??

Apologies in advance if these Q's have been asked b4, havent fully worked out the search ye and Im brand new to the forum.

Mine didnt, it is a 3.4. I dont think any got these as a stock or option. I asked for this and was told that it was not available.

Thanks daza, in fact i bit the bullet and decided to have a grovel around under the car and see if the ratio was written somewhere on the diff, and sure enough, in tiny black writing on a white sticker it says "ratio 3.46"........talk about spewing!! , no wonder it feels slooowww..... in comparison to the old VY ute and the VZ ss sedan i test drove.

Spose holden must have thought a 6 speed V8 ute with no traction control and low final gearing was a bit unsafe for the GP to handle? or would lead to too many warranty claims.

any idea whether holden will put the 3.7 diff in and warranty it, and if so for what price? might be worth doing.

All depends on the dealer. I know some who will put 3.7's or 3.9's in.

I am exploring this matter with my service manager at the moment, 3.46 to 3.9's.Will let you know how it goes regarding warranty.
