View Full Version : Early GenIII blocks?

I've "heard" (rumors are wonderful aren't they?) that early GenIII blocks - eg. VTII's, VXI's - had thin cylinder sleeves. So thin that they basically can't be bored at all? Supposedly this was revised in the VXII onwards. The newer GenIII isn't exactly a W-block Chev (0.125" overbore!) but at least there might be one rebore/reco in their future? When my SV8 is 10 years old and 200,000km will the new owner be able to machine the block or is it just a throw-away?
[ In case you haven't noticed, I'm still pretty much stuck in the old cast-iron V8 mode .. ]
Rod.
Hmmm - couldn't an engine builder just fit new cylinder sleeves if they can't be bored????

Yep .. suppose so. Thought this is a lot more expensive and difficult than a rebore?

Pretty sure it was early LS1's, VT's included, max bore should say hone was 0.005" oversize.
VX-onwards I am pretty sure the cast iron liners allow for a 0.020" bore and 0.005" hone to take it to 0.025" thou max.
Correct me someone if I am wrong, also not 100% sure on the late LS1's.
Other pricey option is new sleeves.

they can all be bored out and honed as above no probs.
only issue they used to have was that if the bore is oval ( early piston slap issue) ;) it may exceed the rebore tollerance thus it's new sleeves.
