View Full Version : Is this possible?

Now I am confused...

I have done my fair share of trolling through hundreds of posts and hundred of hours reading about about maf edits, mafless edits, this software vs this software etc etc etc.

Recently I have been chatting with a mate about us both getting edits to our LS1's.

He now tells me, that he has been chatting with a mate of his who is a mechanic for a very well known prestige car manufacturer (In the same class as Porshe, Audi, Mercedees, Ferrari but I will hide his identity) This fella states he can flash a tune into a LS1 using the gear at work that he works on these prestige cars. He further stated he would do it for nothing. It seemed to be 'no big deal'

So now Im totally confused. Recent posts relating to tune prices insist that paying $1500 is totally justified. Ater reading all the posts relating to r&d costs etc etc etc I can justify paying this amount...but now I get offered this?

My question is.....is it all possible? From the outset, I am a skeptic, but I have been given an invitation this week to watch it happen to my mates car!!!

What do you think?

When I first found out the cost of an edit I thought it was overpriced, to say the least.
Even tho your car is sitting on a dyno in order to extract every last ounce of "oooph" via a laptop connected to your I/O port, I just thought that something around half the cost of what they were asking would be more appropriate.

Lets face it... if you change something after the edit, you'll only have to get it re-done!

You'll find most tuners don't charge for a tickle up on the tune if you add more go fast bits ;)

Your tuner must be a top bloke then. Most people get charged for tune touch ups. My tuna charged me 500.00 for tune touch ups for headers and cat changes. standard headers and cats to high flow cats and tri-y headers. it just pays to get all your mods done prior to edit. That was my mistake. Although i thought 500.00 was way over the top for the touch ups, especially after the car only made 7 more rwkw with the new stuff on and tuned. It just goes to show that the standard headers are pretty good.

Yeh that defantely is over priced, from my experience with tuners i got charged $80 with my induction for a re-tune at LS1 Performance. (MCAI, 4" MAF)

Power Torque quoted me $600 installed and tuned with the OTRCAI.

His mate the mechanic is talking thru his arse.

If you've done all the reseach on here you will know that:

1. Joe Blow "Technician" at the local Holden dealer can't upload anything to a car that the TIS system doesn't approve for that VIN. (So no HSV tune into base car)

2. You require a software package written for the LS1 computer to be able to write to that computer. Just as you can't tweak up a Fazza with LS1 Edit, no other manufacter's software would be able tweak up an LS1.

3. HSV aren't a prestige vehicle manufacturer.

As others have stated, he is most likely just going to flash a stock HSV tune into your car. No dyno time, HSV have done the R&D for him, and he's using his employers equipment to do it (i.e. no cost of equipment).
I'd still be a little careful about having an amatuer play with your PCM even if he is only flashing a standard tune - since it's still possible to totally kill your PCM if you bugger it up (Requiring ~$150 to replace)

I woud be cautious before writing anything to your VCM - find out what it is he is flashing first. The GTS binary is MAFless and designed for C4B heads and a higher spec. cam. You can't just flash anything into the ECM without knowing a bit of history about the vehicle, its current setup and fuel.

Will he warranty the work if the engine blows up?
