I have an auto series 1 CV8 and the dyno guy wont run it in 3rd as it will go over 200klms and wants to avoid 2nd gear kick down
My question is will it make any difference to the read out as Its a local dyno shoot out comp ( Mark from power torque did an edit and it made 239rwkw)
cheers Allan

What power did it make on the dyno in second gear??.. Auto's should be done in 3rd gear from what ive seen and been told something about the 1:1 ratio.

I havnt run it in 2nd as yet, the edit was done in 3rd like you said 1:1 ratio that is the question is 2nd going to give a close figure to 1:1 ratio power output

You stand to lose some power as the gearing is setup for torque multiplication. Theoretically, there should be no real difference - power is power, no matter what the torque multiplication. But diff ratios have proven to slightly alter power readings, so why not transmission ratios?

I have an aggressive kickdown program and still dyno in 3rd. You just start the run from a higher RPM/MPH. Its your call - tell them to begin the run from 100kph to guarantee zero kickdown, easing into the run on ramp-up.

You wont win anyway, unless you have a really tough cammed car. Autos don't dyno well. Too much tranny and converter losses compared to an M6. But they rule at the track, unless you are a very good driver.

In the end its his dyno. He paid for it.

Good luck.

When I dyno'd my clubby at a particular dyno dynamics user it was ran in 2nd. I thought 3rd was the norm so asked to run it again in 3rd. Same dyno, same conditions, minutes aparts and the difference was marginal , 2-3rwkw at the most which can happen between two runs in the same gear!

Dont forget guys the "REAL DYNO" is on the track and proven that some smaller figured dyno cars can beat the bigger ones.
Just look at some of the guys here.

cheers AllanThere is a fix for the second gear kickdown on the dyno, 3.73 or 3.9 diff ratio

My avalanche was run in second as well in shootout. Made 198.6 awkw. The operater said it has to run between certain speed ranges. Also mine kicks down to second up to around 120 - 125kph, and will wind past 200 in third if there is no speed limiter, havnt checked that yet. I dont think the dynos are set to safly read past 200kph. Where third or fourth gear in a manual may bring maximum revs at around 200kph where they can still read accurately.

Ok thanks guys I was also told that 2nd gear gives the same power reading but at lower rpm this is to save his dyno ( max speed 200klms)
There are to be some ford boys there I hope to supprise them, car has usual mods + edit 240rwkw I think in shootout mode with 50psi in tyers it should read a bit higher
cheers Allan

cheers AllanJust be careful with the Ford boys ...I have seen some with over 300 kw at the wheels and 400  ...in sleepers too!

As mentioned dont get too hung up on what the dyno says. I have seen 'lower' dyno'd rwkw cars get a big jump on me and vise versa. It is great for tuning and an indication but many other things affect go factor on the street/track. I think my diff change made a bigger difference in 0-100kmhr times and seat of the pants than most other mods including the edit. rwkw is not the be all and end all.
