View Full Version : Smoke coming from my steering wheel!

Hi guys.

Driving back to Sydney along the F6 this arvo, I hit the intermittent blinker (I'm not sure what you call it...but it's where you tap the blinker stalk when changing lanes, rather than putting the blinker on completely), and it made a bit of a buzzing noise. It's done this before (my VS does it too) - I think it's when I press it too hard and it goes halfway between the "intermittent" setting and the "completely on" setting.

Anyway, this time it stopped working, and a bit of smoke started rising from the steering wheel (out of the top, where the airbag cover ends). I blew it away, and there was more (accompanied by a foul electrical smell). I pulled over and switched everything off, waited a minute, started it up and everything seemed OK.

Now when I go to use the intermittent setting, sometimes it works, and sometimes you can hear the can clicking rapidly, while the blinkers don't flash.

Obviously I've burnt something out...but what? I thought the can was behind the dash somewhere? What would've caused smoke to come out of the steering wheel?

Cheers,
- Febs.

That's what I thought at first...but wouldn't the relay be with all the others, under the dash? The smoke definitely seemed to come from the steering wheel.

Also it still works sometimes, just not all the time.

Ahh well...will pull it apart when I get a chance and take a look. Anyone got any tips for opening the wheel up? Is it even safe to do, with the airbag in there?

Cheers,
- Febs.

Ta.
I'm not in a rush so I'll just wait til I see you. If I rock up next Wednesday with the VS, you'll know the VX has burnt to the ground. :D

I wont be in until the week after this one. Still have carers leave until then. Its a good thing the baby sleeps so much. Gives me time to tinker with my other baby.

My boss just had the same thing in his VTII R8. Goes the quick blink, buzz buzz from the relay, gets home and has a play to see what's doing and lets the smoke out. As everyone knows, as long as the smoke is on the inside it's good to go, once the smoke is let out it's broke. He got a new stalk fitted, all good now. My Dad had to replace the on in his VU SS as well. With the headlights on, he'd hit a bump and it would turn the high beams on. Was wondering why people were flashing him as he drove down the F3 one night.

Hey Sonny, not yet. I haven't put the rear bar on yet (everythings painted, waiting for the license light loom to arrive from melbourne), the wife is getting the sh!ts when i go out to the car instead of doing the things i should be doing for the baby.

Geez your lights were in good nick :) Thanks Sonny. With the freshly painted bar and new grill, its like new. (i guess it is new).

The foggies refused to fit. Mounting them upside down, and swapping left to right got closest, but still no go. Does anyone know if its foglights AND mounting bracket that is different between the VT and VX Calais?, or just one or the other.

Woohoo ... another thread hijacked!

Meh, go nuts. I got my answer within 20 minutes. Time to ring Holden parts, then probably hit the wreckers. :)

Thanks guys.

If too much FLICKING means you will need a new stalk, mine should last a lifetime!
