Hi,
I am about to purchase a package of 18 inch wheels and I have sourced them from different suppliers.
I have a choice of Nankang NS2, Federal or Maxis Tyres.
Which brand of tyres should I go for ???
The package prices are all around about the same.

Hey oscillator,
The Nankang NS2s have received a number of positive reviews by forum members who swear by their grip in dry and wet, especially for the price it's been said they are the best value for your $$. The most recent thread on the Nankang NS2s is here (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=38872) but there are other threads expressing their quality.
Details posted on the Maxxis Victra MA-Z1 (approx $198) stated they were ranked 3rd out of a 9 tyre test conducted by Wheels magazine recently. This is the thread on Maxxis Victra tyres here (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=38760&highlight=maxxis+tyres) They were ranked top in wet stopping, 4th/9 in dry braking, 3rd/9 in wet cornering, 4th/9 in dry cornering, 6th/9 in slalom, all for much less than the price of the Michelin Pilot (ranked 2nd) and Goodyear Eagle (ranked 1st).
Regarding Federal tyres, there are a few posts within tyre threads recommending them. The following thread here (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=30050&highlight=federal+tyres) has a few members commenting on their grip and value.
Overall, the Nankang NS2s have received a lot of positive reviews recently. Hope that helps in your decision. :burnout:

I have had Maxxis tyres on mine for about 4k now. They have
porformed exceptionally well in wet and dry and at speeds over
200kph. I will definitely buy them again once they wear out.

I've got a set of Federal's (245/30/19) on the back end of my ute and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. They have seriously good grip in the dry (and they have done me ok at the drags too) and the wet weather grip is very good as well. Obviously if you push it they will let go but its nothing that a little throttle control and oppy lock cant fix :D

At $125ea for 235/45/17's the Nangkangs are exreamely good. Can be a little noisy at 120+ but overall are a good tyre

I've just clocked over 5000km's with a set of the Maxi's on the rear (for which i paid $160 for in 235/40/18) and i just love em! for a cheap tyre they're so far better than the falkens i had previously, the marshalls, oh an those shitty bridgestone things that were on there originally.

I had a set of Maxxis MA 501's (17's) on my old VS2 GTS. They were pretty good in all weather conditions. Pretty good dry and wet grip. And they seemed to last forever.
Have Fereral SS595's (18's) on the ute at the moment. Great grip in the dry and good in the wet. Only had them on for about 15,000km so I don't know how long I'm going to get out of them, but they still have better than 50% tread.
Would not hesitate to recommend either of these to you.

I work at a leading tyre outlet, nankang are a very cheap tyre. They are hopless in the wet, the pick out of the 3 is the US engineered maxxis, we sell heaps and only ever get good feed back, the federals aren't to bad , which helps grip. We have 235/45/17 maxxis on the work ute and compared with a sava tyre which is what we had on previously they are miles in front. The 235/40/18 maxxis usually retail between $200 - $215. You can buy them cheaper depending on which pattern.

In that Wheels tyre test that myles mentioned, the Maxxis tyres came third but not by a big margin compared to the winner (something like 1.5 points on a 100 point scale) - and cost about two thirds the price of the winning tyre. To me, that's hard to argue with.

Gen3SS, what's the wear like on the Maxxis? What sort of life span can be expected for the 18s?

Cheers mate calling them now..
I hane Bridgstone Potenzas 235/40/18's not paying over $400 each
I've been riding on Nangkang NSII's since umm feb i think.. They are pretty good.. Traction isn't too bad in wet and dry. Not a bad tyre for what they cost.
I was told that they fit them to their work cars at tyhe tyre joint I got my mags/tyres from cause the compund is a little harder and wears a little slower.
you can pay more and get performance tyres that wont get 10,000 out of a set.

Anyone know what the difference is between a Maxxis MA-Z1 Victra and a Maxxis MA-V1? Bob Jane T-Mart in Canberra are quoting the MA-V1 at $206 per corner.

Shop arround mate, i got the MA-V1's for $160 a tyre through my mechanic, i had to take them elsewhere for fitting which was another $10 per tyre.. very happy with them!

Mine are also MA-V1 in 18inch. As I said earlier, very impressed with
them. Shit all over the Bridgestone and Kuhmo's that I have had on
previously.

I spoke to Bob Jane as well about the Maxxis MA-Z1 today - and he also said that the only can supply the MA-V1 @ $ 206 fitted and balanced.
So is there any other suppliers for Maxxis that can supply the MA-Z1 tyres in Sydney?

I got some Maxxis V1's a few weeks ago and so far appear a good all rounder.
(Time will tell on the wear factor.)
Spoke to Bob Jane about the Z1's and they had no listing. They rang their
supplier who was not able to supply.
Emailed the magazine who published the tyre test and was referred to Bob
Jane Head Office in Melbourne.
Settled on the V1's this time.
It appears the Z1's are not yet available in N.S.W.

I had a set of 235/40/18 Maxxis MA-V1 fitted to the SV8 a while ago.
Braking and cornering in the dry is excellent as is accelerating, in the wet braking and cornering is excellent but acelleration in the wet is pretty poor to say the least. They tend to break traction with the slightest prod of the throttle. Took the car in for its 5000klm tyre service and the tyre guy said that the rear tyres still look as new so there was no need to rotate them.
The Bridgestones I had on before these were 70% worn after 10000klms, and I have not altered my driving style. So far the wear seems to be a little better than that.
I am quite happy with the choice, considering the price per tyre I think these are great value. I am so happy with these I am looking at putting a set of 17's on the wifes NXR coupe.
Cheers,
Tim.

Maxxis website in US: http://www.maxxis.com/products/automotive/product_thumbnails.asp?id=11#Automotive
I reckon the Maxxis MA-Z1 Victra (purely by the fact that the wheels tyre comparo included them and not any Kumhos or Nankangs) they would be the best bang for your buck bar none. I say that because I have never seen Khumo or Nankang actually in any independent test where they are freely compared to their opposition.
Only small points seperate them from seriously big buck tyres like the Michelins, Goodyears or Bridgies. For $200 per corner (vs $300+) it's a no brainer.
I'll be booking up a set for the SV8's next tyres, no problem.

Well I am after 2 new tyres for the rear, cause the current Falken ZE326 are shit and scary to drive especially in the dry :) I'm getting wheel spins on the highway when give the car a bit of juice... After talking to a few of the boys from here, some are saying go the Nankangs NS2's ($159 fitted etc) and others saying Maxxis ($169 fitted etc). My question, with previous experiance which ones perform better and remember these tyres will be for the rears only.. I hate oversteer, but its become a daily thing at the moment with the Falkens. The Nankangs were getting Voodoo really good 60' at the drags, but what are the Maxxis like with grip. The Nankangs can be bought for $125 from tempe tyres, however you add postage ($10) and fitting ($11) they come to $146 so not much cheaper... I am not too worried about life, if I get 15,000k's out of them I will be happy :) Just the more I research and read up on them on the forum more confusing it gets...

$110 for NS2's in Brisbane now. Well worth it for the $$. Even 19's are $265 which is pretty damn good for a large tyre.
Where is that from? At that price worth buying a set and getting them freighted up

mine seem to be wearing fairly quick may get 20,000k. not bad tyre better than some others i've had that were more expensive. only thing i find is they are noisy, like a 4wd tyre. striaght line but more so when turning, at one stage i thought i needed another wheel bearing, bad noise turning right from front, replaced that bearing noise still there :(
but for me only a problem with the music off. the cost outweighes that noise problem.

I can't believe how good the Federals perform. I have 18's on my statesman, they grip well, are very quiet and after 21,000km's almost look new. A guy who lives in my street has Fereral 18's on his AU ute. He did 68,000km's on one set. I wouldn't have beleived it if I hadn't seen it. Even have them in 18's on my motorbike trailer :)

Usually tyres that last a long time are a harder compound rubber. Normally this means less grip. You can’t really have both great grip and long lasting.
A Really soft tyre will give loads of grip in most conditions, however wear very fast, you can wear them right out in a few hours of track work. Or maybe 10,000k’s on the road.
Best time to report on tyres is when they are at least half worn, by then you have better idea. Almost all tyres seem great when very new, then the bad ones go off. If they are long lasting your stuck with them for a while
I’m not pushing any tried a lot over the years and they all have bad points. What suits one car well may not suit another even in the same model, variation in alignment and suspension components will effect which tyre works on what car.
