Ok you don't want to spend too much money but how much are you willing to spend?

Give us a ballpark figure

yeah a ball park figure would be good

What the motor/cars current status

200000km ?? smoke or no smoke

My recommendation would be

New exhaust (maybe find a set of VK efi extractors std)
Decide is you want to run the car on ULP or PULP
Get the Dizzy reco'd & recurved suit the desired fuel (generally around $100-150)
Also get the dizzy chap to recommend you some spark plugs
then get the carby cleaned & reco'd (they do need a bit of maintaince to keep them in tune)
the 2.8ltr six ran a air duct along the pass side chassis rail to collect cold air , fit one & plumb in to your air cleaner.
Or go for a Crome top & bottom air cleaner from autobarn or my garage :)

Now the car should be cruise'n nice & cleanly,

then its time to decide if you want to go further.
yella terra head
cam
vk efi conversion,
etc............. to the point where people will tell you sell the car & buy a car with a v8 already :)

i did that to my vh. i cut the snorkel off leaving about an inch or so. I needed two of the rubber tubes to reach the tray. Other than that it is easy.

im willing to spend upwards to about a grand, the cars done ~ 330,000kms, its an ex cop-mobile, the engine has been completely reconditioned with in the last couple years. The body is quite good, the engine is stock, the only thing ive dont to it is given it mags.

edit: as for the grand figure, its the amount im willing to spend on it over time, but things like a couple hundred here and there... and i dont have money to throw away, so things i can do that will save me money compared to something else would be good.
