View Full Version : Stones in sills/skirts

The other day after breaking for some lights heard a rattling sound coming from the floor/side of the Munro, which travelled forward along the car as I stopped. Worked out that the body kit under the doors was full of stones  . After closer insection there is a gap in the front part of the inner rear wheel arch where any stones flicked from the tyres end up going down into the rear section of the body work sills  . Worked out that after washing my car and giving the inner guards of the wheels a high pressure spray I loosen'd all the stones jammed down the back. Have looked at a few other commodores and they are the same, what an obvious design fault  !! Took the rear covers off the skirts/sills and cleaned out the stones, but a week later they both have at least a handfull of stones in them again and I don't even drive on unsealed roads. Does anyone know of a solution for this problem, don't know if it could lead to future rust problems?

Its even worse with the utes, try taking off the little extra plastic piece on the side skirts infront of the rear wheels, its always filled with stones and dirt and shiet, ive got 1/2 the calder return road stored in mine.
damn extra weight ;)

Yeah I have the same thing on my SS, I just filled it up with foam (just like what i use clean the car)... Only thing that I could think of at the time, cause it was really starting to annoy me that when ever i breaked hard or took off at the lights u hear this rolling noise of rocks.. hehehehe solved the problem so far :D

but you can rust the old school metal commodores :p
what will the current model commodores be like in 20 years time, i'm guessing not like this -

Yep all commodores seem to have this fault. I put it down to really crappy design of the wheel arches and the skirts. Like from just looking at it, you can tell that it's a really dodgy design. They obviously don't pay the designers very much at Holden. Btw I wouldn't fill it with foam (the sponge sort) because that will just absorb water from a wet day, and then you'll be carrying even more weight. Best way is to see if you can block up the holes.

that is what caused the big rust holes. Used spak filla as a temporary fix and it just soaked up the rain.

it has only become visible since last inspection. It's almost fixed, there are just a few little holes that didn't get done.

I found the same issue shortly after getting my Monaro.
What I did to fix it was that I got some heavy duty foam rubber ( the stuff they use for expansion joints in concreting ), cut it to shape and blocked the gap. This stops the gunk flying of the tyres to enter the plastic sill. I cut it short enough at the lowest edge so that it would allow water to escape. It's been there for 2.5 years and seems ok.
