Hi All,

Does anyone know how to tell when your crown and pinion need replacing?

Basically, I'm getting quite a bit of backlash (once my car warms up) on my VX (non-LSD) [a thump towards the back after coasting at lower speeds and then giving it some throttle], and I have been told that I should get my crown and pinion replaced, as this is what is causing the backlash. I'm sure that this is also causing a "ting" noise on occassion, when I shift from drive to reverse, which seems to be reverberating from the tailshaft towards the diff end of the car.

Does anyone know, if there are any other signs that the crown and pinion are on their way out, because I don't want top replace this unnessecarily. I just want to get this fixed, because it is quite annoying.

Thanks for anyone's help!

Cheers!

your symptoms suggest bearing failure
so I reckon get the back cover off
and with a dial gauge check the back lash
and also look at the wear patterns on the teeth
if you see abnormal patterns like galling I suggest you will eventually damage
the gear set...
I would look to having someone rebuild it..new seals and bearings
will be the go unless you have damage to the crown wheel and pinion
