Picked up my brand spanking new Phantom (Black) Coupe 4 yesterday. Love it, looks awesome, goes great and sounds sweet. This morning, after travelling a grand total of 80 kms in it, the right rear tyre went flat. I stopped straight away and it just looked like a flat ... had to get the NRMA to come and help change it because the damn wheel nut caps wouldn't come off with the crappy little plastic tool they give you to remove them. When we got the wheel off the tyre was completely shredded on the inside wall, , the NRMA guy said that it had to be a faulty tyre as there was no evidence of any puncture and I had barely used it.

There are lots of threads about tyre life but how is everyone going with the 19's in terms of pot holes, punctures etc. I haven't even had the car 24 hours yet so I would like to think it's a one off. If you guys could set my mind at ease that I won't be replacing tyres every few months I would feel much better.

16 years wo a flat. I'm so ****y now I don't even carry a spare (to save 25kg).
Anyway the main concern I would have is to make sure you get tyres with XL load ratings. I have found that many tyre manufacturers are making XL ratings for their tyres. I am fitting 95 rating 235/40 18" soon, even though the standard is 91 and the rears will be 265/35 18 97, compared to the usual 93 rating. My current front tyres are 255/35 18 90 and they are as mushy as hell on my car.

You must be taking my luck, this is my first flat for about 2 years but I must have had at least 10 in the last 10 years. Nails, screws, bits of metal, mother of all potholes ... you name it.

Just got off the phone with HSV, no 255 19's in Sydney, can get one in tomorrow. Had the car for a little over 12 hours and it's already back in the dealership for the night :bash: They assure me I am just really unlucky so fingers crossed I got my bad luck out of the way early !! Will get some pics when I get it back and post them up.

Cheers, Nick

I ran 19's on my Ute, and realy only got 1 flat . Only prob was I only got around 15 k's to a set of rear tyres and was putting on 3 sets a year ,but id nearly get 30k's out of the fronts. Now Ive gone back to 18's ( much cheaper tyres).

Ive had 19's on my VS GTS since i got it and have only ever had one flat. Couldnt find a hole but i presume it was a small nail or something of the such.

I cover 15-20K a year as the car is a daily driver with 19's on all corner without any probs.

Some people do say that the ride isnt as soft on 19's as on 17's but i think thats a whole other issue ;)

Sorry to hear ya bad luck mate, i hope its just a once off for ya. Good luck with it!!!

Its all a matter of luck I think.
I regularly get nails and mainly screws in the tyres as I use the Azenis and they seem to attract them.
I also don't have mud guards so the front tyre will run over a nail or screw then throw it with force to the rear.
Normally a left because this is where they get washed up next to the curb from all you tradesmen out there. :bash:
My advice...stay away from construction sites and new houses being built or worked on.

Four years and 50,000 kms without a puncture on the GTS so I think you have had an unlucky experience. On my VS Clubsport and VS Calais, which both have 17" wheels, rear puncture are not uncommon and as pointed out by SV8VY are usually caused by tradesmen's rubbish. You are not even safe from punctures in a car park. They seem to leave their junk everywhere. At one stage it was happening so frequently I suspected that someone may have been out to get me.

Don't understand your reference to 255 19s. The standard 19" HSV fitment is 245/35/19.

HSV Coupe 4 models have 255/35/19 tyres on the rear.
NickS: I think you had a bit of bad luck, I haven't had a flat for at least 5 years on 18" and 19" tyres, and that's with a lot of driving on country highways and roads.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Georgec, as Cat755 said, Coupe 4 has 255's on the rear, 245/35/19 on the front as normal. Rears are also 9 inch rims instead of 8's.

Hammer, turns out it was a puncture, just couldn't find it on the road side. By the time I could feel it and stop it was too late. Have done another 300 kms over the weekend with no troubles, taking it up to Katoomba tomorrow so fingers crossed it's all good now.

Do yourself a favour before you go to Katoomba, slip into a servo and check the pressures. It could have been low from predelivery casing case failure.

Thanks, good advice, checked the pressures as soon as it came back from the dealer and they were all about 30 psi, pumped them up to 40 psi and all should be good !!!

NickS; When I ordered my R8, I optioned it with tyre pressure monitors to warn me when a tyre was losing pressure, so hopefully I should be able to stop before any tyre damage occures. Wasn't a cheap option but niether are 19" tyres. Enables me to check pressures every time I start driving anywhere :D

Cat755; Thanks mate, now I feel like a retard for not getting it. When I saw that as an option I thought "waste of money" as I figured I could just check the tyres myself ... which I do regularly anyway. Didn't know they warned you that tyre pressure was dropping, bloody good idea now I think about :bash: Clearly needed your wisdom before placing the order :D

Anyone now if you can get it fitted after delivery ? Or factory option only ?

I've had 19" Nankangs for about 18 months no probs. Driven to Sydney, Melbourne and all around Tassie about 15000km.
