I recommend the use of a semi-synthetic like Penrite 15W-40. Don't go too heavy or it won't oil the pins properly. Don't go too light or it sounds gudgeony and noisy. Each car is different, but thats where I would start. Note that with the rebuild I think they re-use your sleeves, so there may not be much bedding in to do regarding rings.

I agree, semi-synthetic (basically all motor oils over SM[?] are semi-synthetic). Fully synthetic oils are basically only useful for continued performance under excessive heat. This link is a (long) excellent discussion on a motorbike board that I found on the topic of synthetic oils .. http://p083.ezboard.com/ffjr1300ownersassociationfrm12.showMessage?topicID =536.topic

In a nutshell this guy (GM engineer) indicates that fully synthetic oils are basically used on performance cars which "might" be used under extreme circumstances (eg. club racing). To either save fitting an engine oil cooler, or a BIG oil coller, they use fully synthetic to cope high temps. In normal driving there is little to no benefit with fully synthetic (apparently). Again, this is all unedited Internet conversation, but it looks pretty valid to me.
