View Full Version : Run-in fuel consumption?

Sorry to be a pain-in-the-butt again, and I'm sure this topic has been done to death before, but how much higher fuel consumption should I expect during run-in? 10% more .. 20%?? My SV8s done about 550km since I got it back from the engine exchange (yes a bit early to start forming conclusion), it's used a tank of fuel already .. mostly highway driving in power-mode (auto). The trip computer says 11.5L/100km which is basically normal, but it just "seems" to be using more.
When I got the car new (ie. factory engine) I don't remember any real difference between early fuel consumption measurements and thoses at 80,000km?
[ The engine is still pretty tight .. smells hot .. starter straining with hot starts ]

Rod.I dont think running your car in on a freeway is a good idea, it states that you should vary your speeds and avoid travelling at high speeds for a long period of time.
Drive around in local streets and dont worry about petrol costs matey. Its a V8.. itll drink!

I should elaborate .. this is Calder highway driving .. you can't drive for more than about 10min without hitting a town and having to go though ten different speed zones. It's getting a fair bit of variance (I hope .. my wife is still driving it).

Get it off her and flog the arse off it mate - all rev ranges.
Better to bed it all in than nurse it and end up with another rebuild.

Exactly! Furthermore, women should not drive anything above a 4 cyl!

Vary your speed while you are running it in, don't risk glazing the bores by sitting on one speed using only light throttle. I noticed you said the readout is still OK but have you checked it against the actual amount of fuel you are putting into the tank as compared to the amount of kilometers you have travelled? Maybe the dash readout is a bit out, I did hear there was an update they could flash in and it might have changed it.

As the saying goes drive it like you stole it if you want to break it in properly.Only when the engine is warm and warm it down also.Variable speeds with hills also.Change the oil after 1000 then again at 5000 (including diff oil)and you wont have a problem.
Leave it with wifey going shopping and 40 km school zones and get ready for a rebuild.
Sorry to seem so prudent and blunt but that's my view anyway.
On the original subject, that is very conservative and you will get better fuel economy after the 10 k mark.
Get it tuned and it will be even better.
Good luck

That reminds me .. the dealer told me I don't have to change oil for 10,000km .. WTF? [remember this is a "rebuilt" engine in an old car] Should I just tell them to do it at 1000km (2000km??) anyway?

Don't know about others here but I treat my bikes and cars the same.
1000 k oil change then 5000k (and diff) then every 5000 k.
First full synthetic at about 10000k.
Synthetic auto oil if auto and full synthetic brake fluid with high boiling point.
Better to be safe than sorry.
5000 km might be overkill but city driving and a regular thrashing takes its toll.
Premium petrol only...you will get more km out of it also.

If its a reco motor definitly change the oil after 1000km's.
All of the contaminents from the new rings bearings etc will be in your oil.
These contaminents are usually very fine metal pieces from the rings and part of the friction material from the bearings.
Also drive it but dont thrash it.
Load it up.
Also dont use synthetic oil to "run it in" (also said from sv8vy) as it is too slippery for the rings to bed in.
Regular oil changes every 5000 and 98 fuel and she'll go forever.

Dont listen to what she says. Ill let you in on a little secret, women enjoy sex more than men! So if she says "No sex for you, shes bluffing!"
And taking a car away from her will only add to her desire to staisfy you even more, try it sometime!
