My Exec was MAFless-tuned on BP Ultimate and I have recently tried running the car on Vortex 98. I THINK it is pinging a little up top (4500rpm+, sounds like gravel bouncing under the car, albeit quietly), but I will get my service guys to confirm it for me (no, not Holden, people who would actually know).
Has anyone had any dramas running Vortex 98? My local Woolies now has 98 and it is a 40km round trip to the nearest BP. This trip is no drama for me :D , but it is a bit out of the way for the missus.

G'day Mik. I think Mongy uses Vortex occassionally and reckons it's ok, but what you describe does sound horribly like pinging. I'd be using Ultimate, unless you've tuned for the Vortex. Cheers

I have used both Optimax and Vortech and had issues with fuel sometimes being inconsistant.
I now use either BP Ultimate or 8000 and wont go back to the other two.

I always use BP Ultimate but thought I'd try Vortex98 once & got pinging too. So, it was back to Ultimate for me :D .
We havn't got Vortex98 ron in melb yet. Have only used ultimate & synergy with good results. No real tune difference between the two fuels. Have noticed "pinkish" tinge on plugs with BP

Same problem here, once was enough.

Depends on how you drive and what you are wanting to achieve. I used to use Optimax wherever possible in my XR6T because it was the only 98RON available in Canberra, but now we have a choice. I have only used one tank of Ultimate 98 and found the car to be running like a jet and very smooth even though I wasn't really driving it hard. The other week I filled up with Vortex 98 at Woolies/Caltex at Gungahlin and found the car to be a bit sluggish and flat. Again I was not driving the car hard but I reckon there was a noticeable difference (using the very technical seat-of-the-pants dyno :p ).
If I am just going to go for an interstate drive to Sydney or Melbourne and will be just sitting on 110-115km with the cruise on then I would probably just use the Woolies stuff but when I am using the performance more around town I would rather use Ultimate or Optimax.
Normally use ultimate, had to put in optimax today, = ping , ping , ping.
MAGGOTS.Will HOPEFULLY never use it again

Took the car for another trip last night and there was no noticable pinging. Could be the fact that it was FRIKIN COLD last night but who knows. I also topped up the oil a little bit between drives as well, adding approx 600ml to get it back to full. Either way, I think I'll stick with it for everyday driving, but when I'm going for a cruise or to the drags, etc, I'll be sure to have a full tank of Ultimate.

Question...I noticed on another forum some comment about octane not being the only decider...and that if your car is tuned for x fuel it may ping or underperform on another due to different fuels enriching or leaning out your AFR's.....is that possible? Or crap?
I guess without all my dribble, is octane the only decider here?

Mick, when it first came out I tried it as Seldo has said. I took it in to Mark and we ran it up on the dyno, checked AFR's and all was good. We even gave it another degree of advance with no knock. Not long after that though the quality seemed to go out of it and I think the octane rating has dropped slightly. There were rumours that the octane rating was around 99 when it first hit the market. It is now at the point (even now it is getting cooler) where mine pings with it in so I have gone back to using BP ultimate all the time now. I talk occaisonally with a guy in BP and he keeps me appraised of the octane rating in Brisbane and it is always above 98 (98.2 etc) so I feel it is the safest way to go.

Opticrap  Yeh, my missus works there and can get as many as she likes but same same, useless to me unless I want to knock about 5 degrees timing out of it.

I've had mine tuned on Optimax, never had a problem with pinging and it goos alright, will get it touched up on Ultimate to see if there is any gains to be had.
