The forum (obviously) experienced a database error. The problem now appears to have been dealt with. No biggie .... instead of sitting on my ass last night worrying why the forum was down, I just went out for a drive in the LS1 instead .... dunno why you lot didn't do the same.

No attitude, just missed the smiley :) at the end .... I just said what I did while the forum was down. You seem to be looking for faults in my posts tonight .... try harder :p

Not yet .... car payment takes priority I'm afraid .... I'm gonna sell the 3.46 gears (unused) in my shed to get some $$ I think. Today was my day off .... luckily, cause I've been sick as a dog today :( Got tomorrow off too though.

Won't help much when there was a disk failure .. :p

The forum server had a disk failure around 9pm last night .. we couldn't do anything about it till around 10am today and it took a few hours to replace the disk and fix the subsequent database corruptions. It is all fixed now and should be sweet.

The search function will not be fully operational until the search index has been rebuilt which will take around 12-24 hours depending .. there are nearly 1/4 a million posts to index.

What sort of disk's do you use Sidey? ATA or SCSI? I've found once the forum starts to get a bit bigger that ATA drives just cant cope with the load and will fall over requiring the move to a scsi array. Might be worth concidering for future growth. CPU load is still quite low even with 60k+ members but vBB loves ram and Disk speed.

B, i have plenty of work atm mate.

RAID is always good. If it was just a single disk failure RAID may have saved you.

It doesn't run on a PC :) It's a Sun and SCSI all the way :D

The disk that failed happened to contain the swap partition which caused the dramas.

Sun Intel or Sun Sparc based? The company I work for is the local agent for Sun in the NT so I've had to play with a few.

As ben said dual sparc :) Sun Intels are just rebadged Intel rack chasis same as NEC etc etc.

True. The AMD based v20 and v40 look more like a custom chassis now instead of a rebadged whitebox.

Not seen the AMD boxen but the Opteron stuff looks impressive. No matter how fast an intel/amd cpu is it still bound by the whol interrupt driven singularity this is why the Sparc platform is one of the best network servers and DB servers around today, has been for decades and will continue to be :)
