Gday guys.

I would like to keep my stock rims that my car came out with, the 17" VX SS rims. But ide rather the shadow chrome look.

Now im not sure if you can get alloy rims chromed, does anyone know if this is possible.
My g/fs dad is a spray painter, is it possible to paint the rims in gunmettle grey, then clearcoat it. Would this work? or would it peel.

Thanks

Here are some pics of what ide like the rims too look like. Have done it on an graphics program

As far as I'm aware, shadow chrome is done in a similar way to powder coating.

Local painter here in Shepparton paints rims in a shadow chrome coloured paint. Looks very good IMHO.
Not that dissimilar to the real thing.

Cheaper option:

Fit Bendix Ultimates, do a track day.
Half way through the day, put front rims on rear (and vice versa).

By the end of the day...bang - shadow chrome look. :D
(Nice pics btw...it actually suits the VX SS wheels).

Cheers,

This is just my 2 cents worth. You can buy this sort of paint as an aerosol can, the gold look seems to be popular. from VHT website (speco)
"
VHT Wheel Paint provides a great finish and real protection for all standard and custom wheels. Even on highways, wheels take a beating. Salt, sand, brake dust and rocks severely damage the appearance and protection of the wheel surface. This unique product resists chipping, cracking and fading, while protecting the wheel surface from oxidation, and is available in six popular colours plus clear coat. Warning: Clear coat is for use on polished or bare metal surfaces only, and should not be used over any painted finishes.

Colours available: Aluminium (SP181), Gold (SP182), Satin Black (SP183), Clear Coat (SP184), Gloss White (SP185), Rally Silver (SP186), Gloss Black (SP187). "

The can says its a polyurethane. if it cross links it will be a moisture cure, therefore it would have free isocyanate groups which is toxic. i cant imagine it being a moisture cure though, and i cant see the msds to have a look at. it doesn't state it as being solvent resistant so id say its just a polyurethane lacquer. it also says it cant be given a clear top coat. i imagine this is due to 3 possible reasons, 1) it will redisolve the chrome finish and reshift the metallic pigments 2) a crosslinking clear coat may wrinkle the finish 3) no adhesion. shame about the clear coat cause that would give awesome gloss. if i were doing it to my wheels i would use a 2 pac polyurethane which would be chip resistant, dunno if i trust there spiel.

From what I understand "Shadow Chrome" is just paint?

Have your wheel done in this color in 2 pak then clear coated and baked.

I hope so anyway..

I actually thought " shadow chroming " is a process similar to chroming, meaning different " layers " of colour, and clears are applied.

Shadow chrom is not just a paint on paint.. It's a bake only paint.. I tried to find paint on kind for my mags but the paint I got was a bake paint and it's expensive... 1L = $60

Mate from what i have been told and seen,
Shadow crome is a Dark base coat and a silver top coat. I watched my panel beater re-spray mine when it was damaged, He said that that's how they are done from fatcory but they dip them to make them consistant.

You can buy the paint your talking about but it's not the same sort of like saying silver is crome.

Hope that helps,
Anthony

I dont know what the process is, but I do know that on my ROH Modenas in shadow chrome the finish is 'chipped'. Little chunks out of the suckers. Aint happy. Wheel isnt deeply dished tho, so maybe they're just a bit vulnerable to road crap.

Yeh well the paint I was able to find was shadow chrome but as previosuly stated is a bake paint.. It is very thin and yes probably would require many coats. I am guessing that the paint I am talking about is the same kind that they dip the whole wheel in.

Perhaps there are more than my wheels chipping out there.....

Mine is a pretty deep chip, the finish looks like its pretty thick.
