I know oil has been done to death on this site and I have done many a search on previous threads going back about 3 years but what I wish to know is there any NEW research on oils or anyone had any recent experiances with oils as my vyss gets a rebuilt gem engine this week so I want to really pick the right oil this time its a toss up between Castrol magnatec,Penrite hpr ?, and Mobil synth semi syntheyic all I want is a quiet motor I know this is been over done (oil threads) but I can only ask.

Why not use the holden oil they sell. If not HSV use the Mobil syntheyic both are great.

I (the non-technical person) responded to the last one of these, but here goes again. IMHO, don't use a fully synthetic for break-in (too viscious??). If you want to use a synthetic because of "magical" properties (eg. extended oil change periods, etc), don't bother. Semi-synthetics (which all SM and above oils are [ I think? ] .. ) do just as good a job. The main reason for fully synthetic is to handle excessive heat. Other than that it appears to have little benefit over good quality semi-synthetic oil.

My (uneducated) 2 cents ..

the fully synthetic is too thin, i agree dont use fully synthetic in ls1's, use the run in oil they specify, plus wouldn't you have to to keep it in warranty ? i'm not a mechanic but thats what i hear other mechanics say
