View Full Version : Monaro not dead yet - Wheels "Holden on" article

COUPE

Interesting article in June issue of Wheels magazine pages 16-17. There are illustrations of what the next GTO / Monaro would have looked like. But unfortunately that has all been canned now.

Holden chairman and managing director Denny Mooney says: "We will do a future Monaro, question is what’s it going to be?" According to Mooney it doesn’t need to be a traditional coupe. There are a variety of interesting performance concepts on the table, he says, and a lot of high-level discussion of what the car could be.

Seems like all the information I got on "no more Monaro" was true to a degree. I think a more accurate statement would be "no more Monaro 2 door". Looking at the picture of the now canned replacement Monaro, I’m so glad I made the purchase that I did. :D

The Monaro isn’t dead, but in its 2 door Coupe form (as we all love and know) quite possibly is.

Those contemplating on maybe buying a new one, I wouldn’t be procrastinating any longer. 'Cause word is they're going pretty fast. I know for a fact on the GTO there is a huge wait.

Cheers.

Cheers. It's all speculation at the moment. Dennis Mooney probably doesn't even know what is going to happen long term. Short term, I believe Monaro will continue through 2006 in Australia. The big question is whether it will get the LS2 engine in Aus. Seeming as most Monaros produced (as U.S. GTO's), already have LS2, you would think it would be a cost effective measure to make them all the same!-But HSV say Holden will not get LS2! But if an LS2 engine did appear for 2006, & if production did cease at the end of that year, then the 2006 Monaro would surely be a collector's item. Cheers Pickles.

The whole appeal of the Monaro was its Coupe styling. If you take away that feature, you've just got another sports Commodore.

The more I hear talk about 'possibilities', the more I'm glad I got hold of a VZ Monaro.

Cheers,
Steve

They did build a 4 door Monaro once, but just about nobody recognizes it as a true Monaro. Only the people that bought one.........

Monaro = 2 doors + preferably V8 (Was the odd 6 that snuck into unsuspecting engine bays) + Made in Australia. (Just like the US market, we like our icons to be homegrown. Monaro probably would have done much better as anything other than a GTO in the US.)

My 2 cents......
