View Full Version : Oil consumption at run-in?

My "new" engine had done about 800km, can I checked the oil today and it's down to about half way between full and add. I'm sure I checked it straight after I got it home and it was FULL. Hmm .. when the car was new, I didn't EVER put any oil in the the original engine between changes. Is this "normal" for a "new" engine? Should it stop as the mileage gets higher or do I have an oil-drinker straight from the get go (I don't know how these things get past emissions with high oil consumption?). I've heard Holden won't do anything basically until the engine has 10,000km on it. Does that sound right?

My VY SS from brand new (14klms on clock) when I bought it has not used any oil between changes.
When it was 6000klms old drove it from QLD to Vicco (had 10K service done in Melb) and home - didnt seem to use a drop either way.

That can be the trouble when you get a new engine, A new engine with the early pistons, rebuilds have the latest pistons

Hmm .. nice. "New" engine with old pistons. Not sure though 'cos it's an '01 engine. Surely it would have been rebuilt with the latest hardware??

.. I think I can see a AUIII 220kw in my near future.

OK .. maybe that was a bit premature .. I'll give it to 10,000km before I call it a POS.
