View Full Version : scraped my own garage
Hi all
I was running late for training at about 7am on Sunday and tried to swing the car out a tight spot in my garage in 1 movement instead of 2 (which would have been more sensible). Scraped the side of the car from about the rear passenger door handle to the rear wheel arch. Man, do I feel stupid. Guess that's what happens when you're half asleep and too familiar with the garage to be on guard. :o
The damage is not really bad (you probably wouldn't notice it from a distance) but it's going to need 2 panels beaten and repainted. Went to the smash repairer this morning and they said probably about $1,000 - $1,100.
Not sure whether to go though insurance or not. My excess is $500 but I'm reluctant to make a claim. I'd hate to throw away 11 years of unblemished insurance record for something stupid like this. I have a lifetime maximum NCB, but what happens if I change insurers? Will the new insurer give me maximum NCB as well? Without any NCB my premium would be over $5,500, so I'm a bit defensive about it!
Any advice appreciated.
cheers

Bad luck djl - nothing worse than doing silly shit like that hey!
but why would your premium be over $5500??

I feel your pain! Scraped the front wheel arch of my car earlier this year, and man does it hurt. Similar situation, was in a hurry, half asleep :o
Mine was around $700 to fix with a $500 excess, so Im just going to cop it sweet and pay for it myself when I have some spare cash lying around..
but why would your premium be over $5500??
Inner west Sydney rates unfortunately, mate. According to my policy schedule, the no claim discount alone is worth almost $3,500. not that I would lose it all for one small claim, but I reckon I'm paying enough already!
thanks for the responses.

If you plan on sticking with your current insurer for a few more years I would use your insurance. But if you're planning on changing I wouldn't expect you to get max ncb for life with your new insurer because as you know they do ask on application "have you had any claims where you were at fault in the last 3 years". Or do they specific for collisions where you're at fault ?. But hey, you may pay for it yourself, and do it again the following week or something different.
I've got max ncb for life with AAMI, i can swap insurers, go back to them, prang my car a few times... and come to think of it have done all that. it doesn't matter, the max ncb for life is for life no matter what with them.
Thanks xshore, that's sorta what I was thinking.
I don't want to tie myself to this insurer because I don't trust them to keep my premiums reasonable.

I know how you feel. Here is a list of sillies that has happened to me over the last few years:
Reverse out of workshop after spending $3000 to restore my Sigma only to swipe the workshop garage door on turning. :bash:
Leave Alfa Romeo in Drive with handbrake on my steep driveway. Get ready to go the the Xmas work function and *BAM* the car has rolled into the garage door, oblierating it. Was a really hot day and a passing truck was enough to slip the handbrake. :o
Within 1 week of receiving delivery of my Monaro, reverse it onto ramps and *whoosh* the ramps end up half way down the sills. The car is rocking on them and has bent both sideframes and punctured the floor.
Within 1 week of that last accident, reverse out of garage only to be hit in the rear quarter by my next door neighbour barreling down the shared driveway. 2 claims in 1 week.
Park Monaro WAY out of harm the other side of the road to play billiards with some mates. Next thing I know bar owner runs in telling me some silver ricey lancer EVO wannabe has reversed into my front fender from other side of the road and took off. :box:
You do look back and laugh (well, kinda...)
Thanks mate, always good to know you're not the only one. :)
cheers all
